Lesson Title: Responsibility The Tortoise and the


Hare
Grade Level:K-2
Big Idea:

Grade Level Expectations:
K- Identify and follow classroom and school routines;
Identify the skills needed to be a successful learner.

2- Demonstrate skills needed to complete classroom
tasks independently; Idenfity goals that lead to learner
success.
ASCA National Standards:
A:A1.5 Identify attitudes and behaviors that lead to

A:A3.4 Demonstrate dependability, productivity, and
initiative.
Learning Objective:
-I can define the word responsibility
-I can explain ways to show responsibility at home and at
school.
Materials Needed:
-Computer (to show The Tortoise and the Hare video)
-Tortoise and the Hare cards
Formative Assessment:
Students will be asked to complete an activity where they
must show their understanding of being responsible
versus being irresponsible. Students will be given
situation cards that are either responsible or irresponsible
behaviors and they will have to identify them.
Lesson Preparation:
Essential Questions:
-What does is mean to be responsible?
-How can you show responsibility?
-What are you responsible for at school?
Engagement/Hook:
Students will watch the video The Tortoise and the Hare
Instructional Procedures:
Counselor(s):
1. Counselor will explain to students that our topic for
today is responsibility.
2. Counselor will ask students to answer essential
questions listed above.
3. Counselor will inform students that they are going to
watch The Tortoise and the Hare and that they are to pay
close attention to which character is showing
responsibility and which character is not.
4. After the video, counselor will ask students to share
their thoughts about which character showed
responsibility and which character did not and why.
5. Counselor will explain the activity to the students
-Each student will receive a card with a behavior on
the card
-They are to read the card and decide if the behavior
is
responsible or irresponsible.
-Once they decide they are to place their card into
the
appropriately labeled bucket (responsible tortoise,
irresponsible hare).
6. Once students have completed the activity the
counselor will review their choices and the class will
decide whether they agree or disagree with the chosen
bucket that the cards were placed in.
Students:
1.Students will listen as counselor explains topic for the
day.
2. Students will answer the essential questions as the
counselor asks them.
3. Students will watch The Tortoise and the Hare being
sure to pay attention to which character is showing
responsibility and which character isnt.
4. Students will share their thoughts about which
character they believe showed responsibility and which
character didnt, and why.
5. Students will participate in the activity
- Students will receive a card with a particular
behavior on it.
- Students will decide if the behavior listed on the
card is
responsible or irresponsible.
-Once they decide the students will place their card
in the
appropriately marked bucket (responsible tortoise
irresponsible (hare).
6. Students will decide together if the cards were placed
in the correct bucket as the counselor reads them.
