Column Load Analysis: LRFD & ASD

The document presents a problem involving loads acting on a column and calculating the required strength of the column under LRFD and ASD design codes. It gives the factored loads and combinations for LRFD, determining combination 2 controls, requiring a strength of 263.2 kN. For ASD, combination 6a controls requiring a strength of 208.3 kN. It then calculates the required nominal strengths of the column as 292.4 kN for LRFD and 347.9 kN for ASD.

Problem 2-2

A column is subjected to the following loads: D = 115.6 kN, L = 66.7 kN, Lr = 22.2
kN, S = 35.6 kN, R = 22.2 kN, and W = 35.6 kN. All loads are compression except
for the wind load, which can be either tension or compression.
a. If LRFD is used, determine the factored load (required strength) to be used in
the design of the column. Which AISC load combination controls?
b. What is the required design strength of the column?
c. What is the required nominal strength of the column for a resistance factor f of
0.90?
d. If ASD is used, determine the required load capacity (required strength) to be
used in the design of the column. Which AISC load combination controls?
e. What is the required nominal strength of the column for a safety factor of
1.67?
