Domain 1: Planning and Preparation
Ms. Freer is well versed in the needs of her students, supports and resources available to the
students in her class. She prepared her lesson to address their unique needs. The information presented will
strengthen their understanding of the English language as well as their confidence with speaking. The goals of the
lesson address both district and state standards. She has incorporated a variety of pedagogical tools into her
lesson to support the children as they work through the grammar unit. The goals set by Ms. Freer are reasonable
and attainable based upon the needs of the students.
There will be multiple opportunities throughout the lesson for Ms. Freer to check for understanding. The whole
class instruction and dialogue as well as the individual writing time will allow her to assess the progress the
children are making. Reading, writing and speaking will be addressed throughout the lesson and Ms. Freer will use
the information she garners as she continues her instruction and plans future lessons.

Domain 2: The Classroom Environment
The learning environment is very positive, and supportive of the students as they continue their exploration and
understanding of the English language. The children enjoyed one another as they worked through the different
parts of the lesson. During the charades game, the children were comfortable acting out words, and laughing with
the members of the class.
The children in the class actively participated in the lesson. They were eager to demonstrate their work. Ms. Freer
helped the children problem solve if they were struggling. She utilized synonyms, online glossaries and she acted
out words to help the children learn the new words. Each child knows Ms. Freer and the other members of the
class will support them. As Ms. Freer worked with the members of the class on their pronunciation and spelling,
the others remained focused and on task.
The time on task was maximized during the lesson, and the children remained actively engaged throughout the
entire lesson. There was no off task behavior observed during the lesson.
Domain 3: Instruction
The children began working on their do now as the bell sounded. The focus of the lesson will be on action verbs.
Together they reviewed examples of action verbs, demonstrated by Ms. Freer. Following the review of the do now,
identifying the verbs as physical or mental, the members of the class played a game of charades. The acting out of
the words helps to reinforce the idea that a verb is an action word. One student who is a very new student
utilized his laptop throughout the lesson to help him translate unfamiliar words.
The class transitioned seamlessly to the next part of the lesson, identifying action verbs the superhero can do.
After identifying the verbs, the children began writing a superhero story. Ms. Freer clearly outlined the steps the
children should take as they wrote their story. Ms. Freer read a short story to the class, and supplemented the
story with pictures, helping to reinforce the verbs. In order to be sure the class understood the expectations Ms.
Freer had, she asked the children to explain what the task involved.
Ms. Freer had the opportunity to work with each child as they constructed their story. During this time she was
able to assess the level of understanding each child held. She reminded the class to be mindful of the verbs,
checking that they were using the appropriate tense.
Ms. Freer reminded the children of the time remaining in the period, keeping them focused on the task. As the
period came to a close she asked the students to complete their story at home. They would have the opportunity
to share their work with the other members of the class.

The children stood and read aloud to the class, again working on pronunciation and intonation. Throughout the
class period, the children had multiple opportunities to demonstrate to Ms. Freer the progress they have made.
