Solving Linear Equation Systems

Solving systems of linear equations involves three main methods: graphing, substitution, and elimination. Graphing is used when the equations are easily graphed. Substitution is used when it is easy to isolate a variable on one side of an equation. Elimination is used when the two equations can be added or combined such that one equation drops away, resulting in zero. A system of equations is a set of two or more equations that are solved simultaneously.

METHODS

A "system" of equations is a set or collection of equations that you deal

with all together at once.

EXPLANATION:
Checking:

y = 3x - 2 and y = -x
6
3x 2 = - x 6
4x = -4

Consistent and
Independent

y = 3 (-1) 2

-5 = 3(-1) 2

y = -3 2

-5 = -5

y = -5

-5 = -(-1) 6

Solution:{-1,

-5 = -5

Consistent and
Dependent

First, we substitute
any equation to the
other equation. For
this, we used
equation 1 which
we will substitute to
equation 2. After we
got the value of x,
we then substituted
it to any equation to
