Alyssas Day Plan (Day 4)

As everyone enters the room there will be questions for them to answer in their Evernote
Journals.
Tell the class that they have 10 minutes to think and ink over the following questions and then
we will have a class discussion.
What are the major relationships in the story so far?
Are they healthy, unhealthy, stable, unstable?
Do they mirror any relationships you have in your life? How?
Bring the class back together and break them into groups. Assign each group with a
friendship/relationship in the story. Give them 5 minutes to reevaluate the above questions.
Each group will have to share their thoughts
Presentation of thoughts. Ask each group how they came to the conclusions they did and allow
other students to offer up ideas after the initial thought is presented. Do this for 10 minutes.
Transition to Evernote journal. Tell everyone to get out their iPads and explain the activity they
are about to do.
They will be continuing the story they started in the last class (using the letter format the
book does). They will be writing a second letter, either expanding on ideas presented in
the first journal or offering new ideas.
Do this for 15 minutes and walk around to provide guidance or answer any questions.
With the last 10 minutes explain and handout the Playlist assignment.
Students will be asked to create a 10 song soundtrack for the first half of the book,
because music is a big part of the novel. Along with that, they need to make an album
cover as well as write a paragraph description for why they chose each song. It will be
due on Monday and they will have in class time to work on it on Friday.
Ask anyone if they have any questions and close out class.

Mallorys Day Plan (Day 10)

As the students enter and get settled in they will have 7 minutes to answer the Think and Ink
prompt on the board. This will facilitate a larger discussion later on.

What do you want to happen in this story to find closure for Charlie, Sam and Patrick?
Define Resolution in a literary context
Reflect on the story thus far. What do you wish to had happened differently or still want
to happen before it ends? Be realistic

Allow students to pair share the last answer with a neighbor for about 4 minutes.
Lecture/Discussion: How to find closure in a book and what makes up a good ending
Give students 5 minutes to use their iPads to open Padlet and answer What makes a
good ending?
Come back as a class, pulling from examples the Padlet to discuss what students want
in the ending of a book. Define resolution in a literary context. Apply that definition to
The Perks of Being a Wallflower. (6 minutes)
Looking back at your notes from the Climax/Boiling Point discussion, how can you tell
that the resolution is helping solve the problems that section of the book (the boiling
point)? (4 minutes)
Find specific passages in the book that you think allow the reader to find closure.
Discuss the passages and get 2-3 strong examples. (7 minutes)
Small discussion (12 minutes): With a partner or a small group, discuss the following characters:
Sam, Charlie and Patrick. Answer the following questions for each:
What is their past as told by the book?
Ex: Sam: what happened in her past that makes her accept the love we think we
deserve?
What is going on in each characters life during the boiling point? What is their
relationship to the group (is it strained, okay, etc.)?
What kind of ending do we want/envision for the character? In other words, what do we
think the character deserves in the end? How does this affect what we want for the
character?
Exit Slip (5 Minutes): Write a few sentences on what you think will actually happen at the end of
Perks. If you have already finished the book, do not spoil it for your peers! Be sure to turn this in
as you leave the class!
