The document outlines the steps to design a concrete mix with a target strength of 4000 psi. It determines:
1) A water-cement ratio of 0.4 is required, which corresponds to 750 lb/yd3 of cement.
2) The coarse aggregate quantity is 1917 lb/yd3 based on its properties.
3) The fine aggregate quantity is 1103 lb/yd3 based on the coarse aggregate size.
4) The initial mix proportions are: water 300 lb/yd3, cement 750 lb/yd3, fine aggregate 1103 lb/yd3, coarse aggregate 1917 lb/yd3.
5) Adjustments are made for aggregate moisture, reducing the water to 259.24

Solution1:
Step 1- Slump Size: 3'' slump is selected for design.
Step-2 -Maximum aggregate size for coarse aggregate is given as 1 1/2 inch. Step-3 Mixing water content and air content: From the table of Slump and maximum course aggregate size the value of water can be found out to be 300 lb/yd3. The same is matching with the information obtained from the local supplier. Moreover, from table the apprximate amount of entrapped air in non air entrapped concrete is 1%. Step-4 Water Cement Ratio: Now the required strength at 28 days is 4000 psi. Hence, the corresponding water cement ratio from the = 0.57. However, the maximum permissible value of water cement ratio need to be checked. Now, as per the problem statement, we need to select minimum water cement ratio = 0.4. Hence, for this water cement ratio the weight of cement = 750 lb/yd3. - This is greater than 5 bags if cements. Step-5 Determination of coarse aggregate quantity: Now, based on the given properties of coarse aggregates that is Unit weight= 100 pcf and maximum nominal aggregate size of 1 1/2 inch and fineness modulus of fine aggregate of 2.8 the volume of coarse aggregate per unit volume of concrete = 0.71 from the table. Hence, the weight of coarse aggregate = 1917 lb/yd3. Step-6 Determination of Fine Aggregate: From the nominal maximum size of coarse aggregate 1 1/2 inch the first calculated concrete quantity = 4070 lb/yd3. Hence, the weight of fine aggregate can be calculated as 1103 lb/yd3. Step7: Summary of proportion for mix design of 4000 psi Hence, the required proportion for mix design of 4000 psi is as follows: Water: = 300 lb/yd3 Cement= 750 lb/yd3 Fine Aggregate =1917 lb/yd3 :
Coarse Aggregate= 1103 lb/yd3
Solution2: Adjustment for moisture in aggregate:
Now, the given values of absorption as 0.6% for coarse aggregate and 1.4% for fine aggregates and natural moisture content of the crushed gravel is 1.0% and the sand is 4.4%. Hence, we need to do the adjustment for moisture content in aggregtes. Hence, using this values, the proportionate reduction in water content =40.78 lb/yd3. So, the above calculated need to be increased by the % of natural moisture content. Hence Weight of coarse aggregate = 1936.16 lb/yd 3 and fine aggregate = 1151.53 lb/yd3 Hence, after doing these adjustments, the proportion is as follows: Water: = 259.24 lb/yd3 Cement= 750 lb/yd3 Fine Aggregate =1936.17 lb/yd3 : Coarse Aggregate= 1151.53 lb/yd3
