Coconut Shell Concrete Study Design

The document describes the research design and procedures for a study on using coconut shell as a coarse aggregate in concrete. It will use an experimental research method to test different concrete mixes with varying percentages of coconut shell replacement (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). There will be a control group without coconut shell (M1) and experimental groups with coconut shell added (M2-M5). The concrete cubes will be water cured for 7, 14, 21, and 28 days then tested to analyze the performance and durability of coconut shell concrete over time. In total there will be 60 concrete cubes tested across the different mixes and curing periods.

Chapter 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND PROCEDURE

The credibility of findings and conclusions extensively depend on the quality of
the research design, data collection, data management, and data analysis. This chapter
will be dedicated to the description of the methods and procedures done in order to obtain
the data, how they will be analyzed, interpreted, and how the conclusion will be met. All
these will help in the processing of the data and the formulation of conclusions.
Research Method
This study shall adopt the experimental method of research. In its broadest sense,
the experimental method of research is a systematic and scientific approach to research in
which the researcher manipulates one or more variables and controls and measures any
change in other variables. Experiments are done to be able to predict phenomena.
Relatively, this method is appropriate to the study since it aims to determine the
performance and durability of coconut shell as a coarse aggregate in concrete.

Experimental Research Design

The study shall use the control group design. In this type of design, a control
group is a group not receiving the same manipulation as the experimental group. The
study aims to determine the performance and durability of coconut shell as a coarse
aggregate in concrete. The experiment shall consist of different concrete mixes. The
control group, M1, will not receive the manipulation, that is the addition of coconut shell,

of the experimental groups M2, M3, M4 and M5. With this, the effects of the variable
altered in the experiment will be observed and analyzed in the course of the study.

Instruments and Materials

The raw materials that will be used in the experiment will be obtained in the
locality. These include the Portland cement as binding agent, river sand as fine aggregate,
gravel and coconut shell as coarse aggregate. For the coconut shell, samples are prepared
by crushing the coconut shell with hammer and sieved ranging from 12 -20 mm. Potable
tap water will be used for mixing and curing throughout the entire course of the
experiment.

Subjects of the Study

Research Locale
The study will be conducted in the locality, specifically in the city of General
Santos.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Research Procedure
All of the ingredients for the concrete mix will be obtained in the locality. These
will be weighed and mixed in the mixer as per the experimental mix design. The
experimental mix design for the study is provided in the table given above. Mixing will
be done for 2-3 minutes after the addition of water. Prior to compaction, the moulds will
be cleaned and greased for easy demoulding and to prevent the formation of bonds
between the mould and the concrete. After pouring the fresh concrete mix in moulds, it
will be allowed to set for 24 hours. The samples will be marked for easy identification
during the experiment. After 24 hours, the concrete will be removed in the moulds and
will be submerged in water for curing for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. After each of the given
time, the concrete cubes will be removed in the water and the appropriate test will be
conducted on the hardened concrete.
In the experiment, there will be a total of 60 cubes of size 150 mm X 150 mm X
150 mm with different percentages of weight of coconut shell. For each of the curing

time given, three experimental samples will be used and the average of the three will
determine the result of each experimental mix design.
