The document discusses elastic studs which are used on fuel pumps and hydraulic actuator pumps of RTA-type diesel engines to absorb vibrations. It provides instructions on fitting elastic studs and modifications made to the protection sleeve for actuator pumps.

Elastic studs are used on RTA-type engines to mount fuel pumps and hydraulic actuator pumps. They help absorb vibrations from the pumps. Regular nuts are replaced with elastic studs which have a rubber sealing compound in their center.

Elastic studs should be fitted with a sealing compound to prevent leaks. The sealing compound is applied to the stud's thread before fitting. A protection sleeve is also used on actuator pump studs.

INTRODUCTION
This Service Bulletin deals with the different elastic studs on RTAType engines.
We have received some reports about cracked elastic studs in the past, but recently we have
also experienced cracking of the elastic studs for the hydraulic actuator housing.
When some of the cracked elastic studs were investigated in our laboratory, it revealed that in
every case the crack started at a corrosion affected area, resulting in a fatigue fracture.
We therefore feel that it is necessary to stress again that a l l recessed studs have to be
corrosion protected by sealing the ring space around the stud shaft with a suitable compound
to ensure that there is no possibility that corrosion can be formed due to trapped water on the
shaft and the top end of the lower thread of the elastic studs.

ELASTIC STUDS ON RTATYPE ENGINES

On RTAtype engines such elastic studs can be found in the following places:

Elastic Studs for Exhaust Valve Cage

Elastic Studs for Starting Air Valve
Elastic Studs for Relief Valve
Elastic Studs for Cylinder Cover

Elastic Studs for Fuel Pump

Elastic Studs for Actuator Pump

Service Bulletin RTA-15

Since we have not received reports of fractured elastic studs for the cylinder cover, the
exhaust valve cage, the starting air valve and the relief valve in recent years we will deal in this
Service Bulletin mainly with the elastic studs of the fuel and the hydraulic actuator pumps.
We must, however, bear in mind that the same treatment as for the latter elastic studs is still
applicable for the aforementioned ones. In particular the instructions provided in para 3 must
be observed whenever an elastic stud has been dismantled for whatever reason.
We recommend that the instructions and modifications in the following chapters are checked
on board or on site and applied at the next possible occasion.
2.

ELASTIC STUDS FOR FUEL PUMPS AND HYDRAULIC ACTUATOR PUMPS

In spite of the fact, that the ring space between the stud hole and the elastic stud for the fuel
and the hydraulic actuator pumps appear to be well covered by the respective housing, it is
still possible that water can penetrate through and is collected in the bottom of the ring space
from where it cannot drain anymore.
Even if the water evaporates eventually, it is still possible that corrosion can start and cause
initial damage to the stud which may lead to a fatigue failure of the stud in its later service live.

To avoid such incidents we have made the following modifications to the previously fitted
elastic studs of RTA 52/62 and 72 type engines which make the proper application of the
jointing compound a lot easier.

FITTING OF THE ELASTIC STUDS WITH SEALING COMPOUND

When refitting the elastic studs the following instructions must be strictly observed:
a)

Before fitting the elastic studs, clean and degrease the JOINT
SURFACES (white spirit may be used as cleaning agent).
Apply an ADHESIVE PRIMER to improve the adhesion on
the cleaned joint surfaces (do not apply adhesive primer to the
thread!). Please take note of the suppliers directions for use of
the adhesive primer!

Sealing
Compound

Jointing
Surfaces

To screw in the elastic stud always use a stud driver or two counter
locked nuts. Tools like pipe wrenches or multigrip tongs etc. which
would cause damage to the shank of the stud must never be used!
c) Screw in the cleaned stud right to the bottom until it rests on its sea
ting surface and tighten to 50 - 200 Nm (please do n o t apply any
l u b r i c a t i n g or s e a l i n g a g e n t s to the t h r e a d !).
d) For the protection of the stud fill the ring space with a well adherent,
water and oil proof sealing compound as shown on sketch. The sealing
compound must meet the specifications stated below.
b)

Specification for the Jointing Agent

Containing no acid (e.g. no acetic acid).
Resistant to oil, diesel oil, heavy fuel oil and water at a permanent temperature of
approximately 100 C.
Short age hardening time (approximately 24 hrs).
Well flowing to properly fill out the ring space to avoid the creation of any hollow spaces.
Good adhesion on adhesiveprimed metallic surfaces.
 Easy to prepare and combine.

Service Bulletin RTA-15

None or only minimum surface shrinkage.

The jointing compound must remain elastic, so that a stud may be removed at any given
time.

MODIFICATION TO THE PROTECTION SLEEVE FOR THE ELASTIC STUDS ON

ACTUATOR PUMPS

As can be seen on the sketch below, the protection sleeves on the hydraulic actuator pumps
must be provided with an aperture on the bottom, to allow any water accumulation on the top
of the lower nut to be drained through that opening.
