Penn States Jordan Lucas (5) stops a Rutgers ball carrier during the Nittany Lions 28-3 victory on Saturday.
Lucas changed his jersey number from 9 to 5 to honor Nyeem Wartman-White, who is out the rest of the year.
Lucas switches jersey number
to honor Wartman-White
By Jourdan Rodrigue
jrodrigue@centredaily.com
UNIVERSITY PARK Penn
State middle linebacker Nyeem
Wartman-White and safety Jordan
Lucas often refer to each other as
brothers.
So when Wartman-White suffered a season-ending knee injury
in Penn States 2015 opener against
Temple, Lucas said it affected him
personally, too, and that he got
emotional just thinking about it.
Lucas and other teammates rallied in support of Wartman-White,
who, after a strong camp, had
earned the starting Mike backer
position after the departure of
Mike Hull and said time and again
he was both mentally and physically prepared for a breakout season,
before he got hurt.
On Saturday, just hours before
the Nittany Lions hosted Rutgers,
Lucas announced he would be
changing his jersey number from
No. 9, to No. 5 to honor WartmanWhite.
Wartman-White responded on
social media, saying he was honored to have his brother rock
that (No.) 5 tonight.
I cant play with (Lucas) for his
last season but I will be on that field
in spirit with him, he said.
Nelson a no go
Redshirt sophomore Andrew
Nelson, who went down with an apparent left knee injury last week
just before halftime of Penn States
27-14 win over Buffalo, did not
dress out for Saturdays game. Junior college transfer Paris Palmer
replaced Nelson at left tackle.
Nelson was seen before the
game with a large soft-brace on his
left knee.
Returning for the Nittany Lions
on Saturday were cornerback
Grant Haley and strong side linebacker Brandon Bell. Haley recorded his second career interception in the second quarter.
Combination
safety/returner
Koa Farmer also dressed out for
the game, despite missing Penn
States last after getting banged
up.
Fireworks light up the sky as the Penn State football team runs onto the
field for its game against Rutgers on Saturday.
Senior linebacker Ben Kline
took reps with the scout team in
practice this week, according to
head coach James Franklin, and he
was seen warming up a bit with the
team pregame, even juggling a
football like a soccer ball and executing the rainbow over-theshoulder-ball-flip while doing so.
Redshirt freshman Chance Sorrell also did not dress out fully for
Penn State, while on Rutgers side,
defensive tackle Darius Hamilton
played in limited amounts after being pronounced out by the Scarlet Knights earlier this week.
Gulla pins em back
Chris Gulla started as Penn
States punter for the first time this
season, and rendered all-purpose
threat Janarion Grant on the side of
the Scarlet Knights, all but ineffective. The Nittany Lions special
teams unit held Grant to only seven
total return yards.
Gulla averaged 41 yards per
punt, all five of which landed inside
the 20-yard line.
He also pinned Laviano and his
offense deep into Rutgers territory
on their first series of the game,
helped along by Lucas, whose athletic play downed the ball at the
two-yard, line forcing the quarter-
back to call signals backed against
the boisterous Penn State student
section. The Scarlet Knights had
two false starts and were forced to
punt on the drive.
Franklin said after the game he was
very proud of Gulla, who didnt find
out he was starting until Friday.
Runnin through the conference
Saquon Barkley and Akeel
Lynch finished with 195 yards and
120 yards, respectively, which is the
first time Penn State has had two
100-yard rushers in a Big Ten game
since 2010, when Silas Redd and
Evan Royster combined against
Northwestern.
Barkleys 195 rushing yards are
the most in a single game since Bill
Belton had 201 yards against Illinois in 2013.
Stripe out a success
Penn States first stripe out appeared a success, as an announced
crowd of 103,330 sectioned themselves off into neatly-divided blue
or white chunks around Beaver
Stadium.
Another new touch added to
Beaver Stadium festivities were the
fireworks that were shot off the
scoreboard as the team ran out to
start the game, and the second half.
Young playmakers lead Nittany Lions in rout of Rutgers
PSU, continued from B1
hurt last week while at left tackle,
and depth in Chance Sorrell, who
can also play on the left.
Part of that confidence, Franklin
said, is also owed to the running
backs.
I think also, when running
backs start breaking tackles and
making people miss and creating
big plays, it inspires (the line), said
Franklin.
Hackenberg also didnt take a
sack for the second-straight game.
But the real proof of progress
came from the run game.
The Nittany Lions finished the
night with 330 rushing yards, 315 of
which were combined solely between Lynch and Barkley and
its 50 yards more than the combined total in the two games prior.
It was also on a set of Rutgers run
stuffers ranked No. 1 in rush defense in the Big Ten.
Thats huge, Hackenberg said.
Akeel and Saquon complement
each other very well. Both really
good players, two opposite ends of
the spectrum, younger guy and older guy, and having them work off
each other is huge.
Penn State badly needed the
boost on the ground.
Hackenberg threw just 10 completions on 19 attempts with 141yards, his
third-straight game with less than 200
yards. In a scoreless first quarter,
Hackenberg threw three completions
on six attempts for 52 yards. In the
second half, he threw just one completion on five attempts.
I think hes managing the game
really well, said Franklin. He
made some great checks at the line
of scrimmage to get us into runs,
and certain looks against their
blitz...two out of three of our games
have been in pretty interesting
weather conditions. The plan was
to run the ball anyway, and manage
the game, and it became even more
a part of that when the weather conditions got how they got.
Penn State missed its first few opportunities to score early, including
a snafu during the teams second
offensive series of the game. With
field position deep in Rutgers territory after the defense pinned back
the Scarlet Knights to their own
five-yard line, and a flimsy 38-yard
punt to follow, Hackenberg threw
two consecutive incomplete passes
and the chance for a 52-yarder was
declined. Penn States excellent
field position was squandered on a
three-and-out.
But after the explosive second
quarter, the Nittany Lions finished
the half up three scores, and punctuated it with an interception
cornerback Grant Haleys second
of his career and first this season after missing the first two games.
Rutgers toed in a 34-yard kick in
the fourth quarter to put three
points on the board, but from there,
the Knight was over for the boys
from New Jersey.
Back-to-back sacks on Rutgers
quarterback Chris Laviano from
Crazy Carl Nassib, followed by
another takedown by Austin Johnson quelled a hopeful Rutgers
drive.
Barkley answered the defensive
effort with a 54-yard carry, followed by his second touchdown of
the night to sharpie in the win for
the Nittany Lions.
Middle linebacker Jason Cabinda said the atmosphere had a lot
to do with the dominant defensive
performance, which recorded nine
tackles for loss and five sacks
alongside two interceptions and
five pass breakups, and now has an
NCAA-leading 31 tackles for loss in
three games
Oh, Cabinda grinned postgame. It was fantastic. The StripeOut came out clean, it was loud, you
know, its hard to play in (Beaver
Stadium).
Drenched fans stuck around
long enough after Penn States 24th
win in the 26-game series to chant
at Rutgers after it ended, 28-3.
The cry?
Were not rivals!
