Course Objectives

Financial Statements are the basis for many decisions taken by the stakeholders of the company.
Therefore it is important to know to interpret the information provided in the financial
statements for better decision making. Financial statement analysis applies analytical tools and
techniques to general purpose financial statements and related data to derive estimates and
inferences useful in business decisions. The objective of the course is:
1. Appreciate the application of relevant IFRS/Ind-AS standards
2. Demonstrate the ability to apply and analyze information contained in the general
purpose financial statements and other filings using appropriate statistical techniques
3. Analyze and interpret the information provided in the financial statements from the
perspectives of various stakeholders Outsiders (Analyst, Banks, Policy maker) and
Insiders (CFO, Treasury team and the Board)
4. Appreciate empirical evidences relating to market based accounting research presented in
leading research journals.

Course Description

The first part of the course shall overview the relevant IFRS standards relating to Revenue &
Expense recognition, Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) and Investments and also the
presentation of financial statements. The second part of the course shall review various empirical
literatures from the perspective of Analysts, Banks and Policy Maker; while the third part shall
analyze the findings from the perspective of Firm insiders such as CFO, Treasury and the Board.
Course Delivery

The first part shall be predominantly delivered using Harvard/Darden cases along with
discussion on relevant IFRS statements. The second and the third part of the course involves
analyzing empirical evidences presented in the leading research journals and replicating some of
them using suitable data. Although review of topics from Financial Econometrics shall be done
through the course (to the extent required), the onus is on the student to familiarize himself with
the nuances.The course being empirical in nature, student will have to demonstrate data handling
skills using MS Excel, VBA and one of the econometric platforms such as SAS / Eviews / R /

Matlab. Practitioners shall take 25% of the sessions.
