*Note that the seam allowance when sewing will be 1/4" and it is included in the measurements above.
**If using a serger for your roll hem please subtract .5" from the length of your ruffle pieces.
***If you would like a longer ruffle on your shorts please add 1" to the length of your ruffle pieces.
After cutting out all of the pieces you should have a pile similar to this.

Cutting Out The Shorts:
When printing out the pattern piece make sure the "Auto Rotate and Center" Box is ticked and page-scaling is
set to "None". This is VERY important. After cutting out the pattern pieces in the size we are making, tape the
black lines together so they are one on top of another being sure to match up the letters.
Step 1: Place the front panel piece on the fabric and pin in place. Cut 2 pieces out
making sure your pieces are mirrored.
Step 2: Repeat with the back pattern piece cutting out 2
pieces again, making sure your pieces are mirrored.
Construction:
Step 1: Take the front waistband piece, and back waistband piece,
put them right sides together so that the short sides are touching
and sew down the short side only.
Now we will sew the opposite side together the same way so that we
will now have a continuous loop of fabric.

Step 2: Fold the waistband in half lengthwise so the wrong
sides are touching and iron to set.
Step 3: Take both of the front shorts pieces, put them right sides together, and
sew around the curve shown in black to the left. Set aside.
Repeat with your back panel leg pieces.
Step 4: Taking your shorts front piece and shorts
back piece you will line up the crotch seam right
sides together as shown here, and sew along the line
as shown in this photo.

Step 5: Take 2 of the ruffle pieces, pin them right sides together,
and sew along one of the short sides so we now have 1 long strip
for our ruffle using 2 ruffle piece cuts. Repeat with your second 2
ruffle pieces.
v2.0 06/05/2014
Step
6: We are now going to be doing a rolled hem on
the bottom of the ruffles . This is easiest if you have
a serger, if you do not have a serger, we are still able
to do it, it will just take a little longer. To do a rolled
hem on a sewing machine fold the fabric back 1/4",
sew, then turn it back another 1/4", and sew. It's
very simple.
Step 7: We are now going to gather our ruffles to sew them onto
the sides of our shorts. . Set the sewing machine on the longest
stitch length possible. Sew 1/4" down from the top of all the ruffles
making sure not to backstitch at the beginning or end. Some
seamstresses prefer to have two rows of stitching in case a thread
breaks, however, if you are using high-quality thread as we do, then
one row of stitching should be sufficient.
Step 8: Now we will gather our shorts ruffle to be the same width
to gather around the sides of each leg. Starting at the top side of
our front shorts piece, pin your ruffle all the way down and
around the side all the way to the back of your shorts back piece.
Your ruffle will be starting at the side of the front shorts piece to
the side of your shorts back piece, being sure to leave the top of
your shorts untouched with no ruffle attached.

Step 9: We can now sew the ruffle to your shorts. To sew the
ruffle to the shorts be sure to sew below the gathering lines
otherwise it will be visible on the outside when we are done.
Repeat with the second ruffle on the other side of your shorts.
Step 10: We will now topstitch the ruffle onto our shorts. Sew 1/8" up
from where we attached the ruffle making sure to catch the seams as we
sew.
Step 11: Lay your shorts out so that the shorts back is in the
back wrong sides together with the front of the shorts on top
of it. You will now fold the back side of your shorts forward
so that the side of the shorts front and back pieces are now
touching.
Place the front shorts so that the front shorts piece ruffle is
on top of the shorts back ruffle. You want your top stitching
of the back shorts piece directly below the top stitching of
your shorts front piece. Pin in place.

You will now top stitch this piece on following the
straight line of the shorts. When the shorts start to curve
you will secure the topstitching by forward and back
stitching a few times and complete this step. This keeps
the legs pieces from opening up too wide on the leg.
Step 12: Lay the shorts on a flat surface right side out out so that
the front panel is facing up. Take the waist band and find the
very center of the front waistband and pin it to the center seam
on the front panel of your shorts. Be sure that your front panel
seams match up with the seams of your front shorts where your
ruffle topstitching is. Pin in place.
Step 13: Sew the back waistband onto the
shorts. Be sure to sew slowly and be sure to
catch all of the seams! You will not be
sewing on the front of the waist band yet as
we still need to attach our elastic.
Step 14: Using a safety pin, begin threading
the elastic through the casing in the back
waistband by opening it up and going in
between the waistband layers.

With 1/4" of the elastic not pulled through the
waistband, sew down the seam 2 or 3 times to close
the casing and secure the elastic in place as shown
here. You will be sewing through the elastic.
Continue threading the rest of the elastic through
the casing until we have 1/4" outside of the
waistband on the other side. Sew down the other
seam 2 to 3 times to close the casing making sure
to sew through the elastic.
You can now sew the front of your waist band onto
your shorts, closing your casing.
Step 15: We can now topstitch the waistband.
This step is not necessary, but we feel that it
really completes a garment and makes it look
more professional. In this waistband in
particular, topstitching will help it lay flat. To
topstitch, sew 1/8" UP from where we attached
the waistband making sure to catch the seams.
