Censorship is necessary in any society.

The existence of free speech is

impossible, especially in todays world, and its existence would
threaten the stability of any society.

Freedom of speech is the right to speak without censorship or restraint by the

government. This gives the opportunity for people to speak their minds out and
not be scared of being shunned off from the society. I believe that the existence
of free speech is possible when we have all means of technological resources to
express our thoughts. Therefore, from my perspective I disagree with the
stimulus.
Firstly, I think that having the freedom to speak out openly expose people to
different perspectives and it makes people think outside the box. For example,
Beyonce recently released a provocative music video called Formation which
has caused a controversy throughout the USA. The music video illustrates that
there is still racism in USA against African-American. In the lyrics of Formation,
Beyonce emphasizes on Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and being proud of her
afro-textured hair, just to name a few. However, the existence of freedom of
speech has its disadvantages too. One of them is that, it has the risk of hurting
people. For example, it is a norm in Bahamas music industry to produce music
against gay. Music artists would even describe explicitly how they would murder
a gay person in their songs and it will be played on the radio. Hence, free speech
has its costs and benefit. So the society needs to decide if they are willing to
forgo the costs of free speech at the expense of spreading information.
Secondly, it prevents people from living in fear. For instance, in 2015 Malaysia
had a street demonstration in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur which consists of
50,000 Malaysian citizens. There were demonstrations also in Sydney and
Melbourne in Australia. These people were not satisfied with the current
government that prioritise more on the Malays, one of the main races in
Malaysia, ignoring the Indians and Chinese. This gives these people the
opportunity to express their feeling towards the government. Truthfully, this has
open my eyes to the possibility that the government may not be right for
everyone has it only focuses on the Malays. Nevertheless, free speech can hurt
specific group of society. This can be demonstrated from what happened in
France about Charlie Hebdo. Charlie Hebdo is a French satirical weekly magazine
that features controversial religious cartoons. Due to the freedom of speech
practiced in France, this has caused the magazine to be targeted in 2015,
causing 12 people killed.
I personally believe that freedom of speech is good and it encourages growth in a
society. Even though there are disadvantages towards free speech, I think that
the advantages of free speech outweighs the disadvantages. To sum up, it is
crucial for a nation to practice freedom of speech.
