Overcurrent Relay Settings Guide

The document discusses settings for an over current relay, including: 1) The relay has two settings - time setting and current/plug setting. The time setting determines the operating time and the plug setting determines the current required for the relay to operate. 2) The current setting is expressed as a percentage of the pickup current to the rated secondary current of the current transformer (CT). 3) An example calculates the current setting of 125% for a relay to operate when the system current exceeds 125% of rated current.

The current setting of relay is expressed in percentage

ratio of relay pick up current to rated
secondary current ofCT.
Thatmeans,
Currentsetting=Pickupcurrent*100
RatedsecondarycurrentofCT
Forexample,suppose,wewantthat,an
over current relayshouldoperatewhenthesystem
current justcrosses125%ofratedcurrent.
Iftherelayisratedwith1A,thenormalpickupcurrent of
therelayis1Aanditshouldbeequaltosecondary
rated current of currenttransformer connectedtothe
relay.
Then,therelaywillbeoperatedwhenthe current ofCT
secondarybecomesmorethanorequal1.25A.

Asperdefinition,
Currentsetting=1.25*100=125%

The current settingissometimesreferred

PlugSettingMultiplierofRelay
Plugsettingmultiplierofrelay isreferredasratioof

SupposewehaveconnectedonprotectionCTofratio200/1A
and current settingis150%.
Hence,pickup current oftherelayis,1 150%=1.5A
Now,supposefault current intheCTprimaryis1000A.
Hence,fault current intheCTsecondaryi.e.intherelaycoilis,

ThereforePSMoftherelayis,5/1.5=3.33
