Description:
In April 2009 a new disease developed in the Region of the Americas,
originally known as Swine Flu, this disease caused by the influenza virus A
H1N1 strain, quickly became epidemic, and in less than two months of
evolution became pandemic, affecting 35 countries and territories of the
Americas and present in all continents.
T E C H N I C A L A S P E C TS In the US – Mexico border, cases were presented since early stages (San
Diego e Imperial counties in California) and have remained in latent form in
E DI T OR S its whole extension.

Gustavo M. Iturralde The two countries and their states took the appropriate measures to treat
cases and to prevent the massive Spreads of the disease. As progress was
made in the understanding of the behavior of the pandemic, early behaviors were modified and
E DI T ION / YE A R OF strengthened others.

P UB LI CA T IO N The Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) took a series of
First (2010) technical support measures to the countries, both to determine the Lumber of cases and their
severity and the negative impact it would have on social development.
Within this collaboration, the PAHO/WHO United States – Mexico Border Office, together with
P AG E S different Health Agencies, developed three workshops on lessons learned in key places on the
60 border, during August and September 2009. Public and private institutions, state and local
authorities on both sides of the border attended these workshops, where they exchanged ideas and
experiences regarding the role of each one during the emergency.

This book is a compilation of the work done by the attendees and shows binational collaborative
