Arabic Studies at the FU Berlin is viewed
within the department as a philological,
literary and cultural studies discipline.
The Arabic Studies course seeks to link
the two primary research priorities for the
department: 1) classical and modern
Arabic literature in their social and
aesthetic dimensions as part of a World
Literature and 2) the Koran in the
pluricultural religious and traditional
landscape of late antiquity.
Chemists interested in interdisciplinary
research are strongly encouraged to apply.
The research-orientated masters program
aims to give students a deeper level of
knowledge and an understanding of the
scientific methods of physics and
depending on the choice of elective
courses of related subjects. Program
goals include deepening students
knowledge of physics, supporting their
specialization in the field, and helping
them expand their skills, including the
ability to perform independent research.
Program participants acquire the ability to
successfully deal with a variety of
scientific and technical problems as
generalists in the natural sciences.

The program moves beyond the traditional
disciplinary segregation within English
studies and seeks to combine literature,
linguistics, and cultural studies. As a
result, it offers a fresh,
uncompartmentalized, and international
approach to the subjects studied. Courses
and study areas will not be confined to
one national literature but will focus on
intercultural and transcultural
phenomena. The program will develop
students awareness of historical context
and the relationships of literature to other
texts and media. contact person:

This program offers academic, researchoriented training within the focus on
history of the 19th/20th centuries.
Historical issues and problems of
historiography will be critically examined
and developed. Comprehensive
knowledge of cross-epochal and
epochspecific developments and
processes of historical transformation both
within Europe and elsewhere serve as a
foundation, as does knowledge about the
history of historiography. In addition,
questions of academic historical
reconstruction, the use of specific working
methods, and the theory-based
interpretation of the past will be
addressed in order to be able to
understand the historical dimension of the
present. Contact person: Prof. Dr. Paul

Diverse research fields in German Recent
History
To structure research and provide a
suitable framework for faculty and
students, the Graduate School is
organised into five Research Areas: Plural
Traditions and Travelling Traditions focus
on the construction and deconstruction of
concepts, practices, and institutions
resulting from interaction and
communication or encounters and
entanglements. Rethinking Social Order
and Governance Contested investigate
interactions, conflicts, and entanglements
in the fields of society, law, and politics.
Sacred Topographies attempts to illustrate
all of these processes, drawing upon an
especially rich field of investigation that
cuts across subjects and disciplines.
