Problem Statement
It is with no doubt that regular exercise and physical activity contribute to
body fitness and psychological health. Some of the well-known benefits of
exercise are controls weight, combats health diseases, improves emotional
stability, promotes better sleep and enhances sexual life amongst others.
However, The World Health Organization (WHO) data reveals that more than
60 percent of the world's population is not physically active enough to induce
health benefits. The reason behind it seems to be the lifestyle choice. Thanks
to modern gadgets and tools, domestic activities and occupational activities
do not require much of physical activity. Passive mode of transport is also to
blame for the declining physical activity levels. The fault is not always ours.
Urbanization has resulted in environmental factors which may discourage
physical activity. Population explosion, increased levels of crime, high density
traffic in cities, air pollution, and lack of parks or greeneries, all contribute
directly or indirectly toward physical inactivity. The consequence of rising
physical inactivity is, as reported by WHO, it has been identified as the fourth
leading risk factor for global mortality and contributes to six percent of
deaths globally. Moreover, physical inactivity is estimated to be the main
cause for approximately 2125% of breast and colon cancers, 27% of
diabetes and approximately 30% of ischaemic heart disease burden. The
statistics on lack of exercise in Malaysia are alarming as well. A World Health
Organization (WHO) study published in the British scientific journal Lancet
found that 61.4 percent of Malaysians above the age of 15 are physically
inactive. The numbers have put Malaysia in the list of the top ten most
physically inactive countries in the region. The Third National Health and
Morbidity Survey (NHMS) revealed that 70 per cent of Malaysian adults suffer
from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cancer and heart
diseases. They also account for 71 per cent of deaths in the country.
Therefore, our engineering team would like to come out with an economical
and technological feasible machine/device that rewards people by doing
exercise in the aim to promote healthy lifestyle and reduce health risks.
Objectives
The focus of this project is:
To develop a device/machine that rewards people with free voucher
discount code after detecting him/her did an adequate amount of
squat properly as required by the system and within the designated
time.
To promote healthy lifestyle and reduce health risk in a fun and
economical way.
To promote squat as a great total lower body workout that effectively
works most of the major muscle groups of the butt, hips as well as
thighs and also a versatile exercise that can be done in almost any
location, even without the use of weights or equipment.
To combine company advertisement in the mean of free voucher
discount code giving with physical exercise, rather than the
conventional on-the-screen promotion that contributes to rising
physical inactivity.
