Procedure for Extended Working Hours
Date
20 May 2008
1. PURPOSE
This document describes the procedure for planning extended work hours in Pearl GTL Project by
Gama.
2. SCOPE
The procedures and methods to be used for the execution of the work itself are beyond the scope of
this document and are covered in respective method statements and procedures.
In general activities that are to be carried out during extended working hours can be divided into 3 main
categories:
1. Short Works: Works that will continue for a limited time (no more than 2 hours). Most
unforeseeable cases will fall into this category.
2. Long, Interruptible Works:
Although will continue for longer periods (over 2 hours), works can
be interrupted, or can commence at a desired time. Most Night Shift activities will fall into this
category.
3. Long, Uninterruptible Works: These works immediately follow normal work hours and can not be
interrupted. Some major concrete pouring works will fall into this category.

3. HSSE
All requirements for standard working hours for similar works, as described in relevant method
statements and procedures, will be valid and will be strictly followed.
Sufficient number of vehicles will be present during the entirety of the extended work.
Workers should not be over-exhausted; and total working time for each worker should not
exceed project specified limits.
Presence of work supervisor, Nurse (First Aid Attendant) and HSE officer must be ensured at all
times.
Sufficient lighting, as per DEP, Method Statement for Night Works and Procedure for Night
Works, will be provided as required.
No food should be consumed at the workplace and workers should take their breaks in rest
shelters.
For Category 2 and 3 Works, an extra TSTI will be carried out prior to work commencement.
No employee will work more than 12 hours in any given day or more than 12 consecutive days
in any period. In addition, Qatar regulations for the working hours and breaks will also be
followed.
Handover of shift from daywork supervisor to nightwork supervisor may be required, especially
for Category 3 Works.

6. PROCEDURE FOR EXTENDED WORK HOURS
6.1.
APPLICATION FOR EXTENDED WORK HOURS
Each field supervisor will assess their work and decide whether applying for extended work
hours is required.
Field supervisors will submit their extended work hour requests to department chiefs until 09:30
daily, who, after examining such requests, will fill in, or have filled in, the "Extended Work Hours
Request Form" that is present in Project Technical Office as appropriate. A sample of the
mentioned form is attached for convenience.
On this form, the work that is intended to be carried out during the extended work hours,
including the location of the work and number of workers to be used for the work, should be
described as well as the names and contact numbers of work supervisors. Information
regarding the type and number of equipment intended for use and lighting arrangements should
also be provided.
After having signed by the job supervisor or group chief, the form will be submitted to Gama
HSE Department for checking. HSE Department should then assign HSE personnel for the
works as required. Name and contact numbers of assigned HSE personnel should also be
shown on the form.
After checking the form, HSE Manager or his designated representative will sign the document
and send it to Site Manager.
After the approval of Site Manager, the duly filled from should be submitted to Company not
later than 12:00 midday in the day extended working hours are intended for.
In case of an Early Start, same procedure will be followed and associated application will be
submitted to Company not later than 12:00 the previous day (i.e. similar to night shift).
After assignment of supervisors by Company, the duly signed form should be returned to
Contractor and announced to the relevant departments. Such announcement should be
completed at least 1 hour before the end of the normal working time.
All preparations and installations, including but not limited to installation of lighting arrangements
and barricading lifting areas, will be in place and being tested 1 hour before the end of daylight.
6.2.
CASUAL CASES
Although above-mentioned procedure will be followed as much as possible, there might be
some cases for which the requirement for extended working hours, although justified, could not
be anticipated. For instance, some concrete pouring activities might be delayed beyond the
standard working hours due to delayed deliveries. For such cases, the application will be done
operational with Company; however, such occurrences should be kept to a minimum.

PLANNING FOR EXTENDED WORKING HOURS
The planning for extended working hours depends mostly on the category of the activity that will
be carried out during the extended working hours, as described in Chapter 2. General
strategies for each category are described in the following sections.
6.3.1.
Category 1 (Short Works)
Works falling into this category are considered to be extension of the normal working hours; and
no extra precautions are required, except for those mandated by relevant method statements
and procedures.
Works will continue as normal and personnel will be transported to camp for dinner after the
completion of the activities.
6.3.2.
Category 2 (Long, Interruptible Works)
There are 2 alternatives for this category of works, and the alternative most suitable for the work
will be decided by the work supervisor prior to associated application.
One alternative is to commence the works at a later time and transporting people from camp to
work site after dinner. This is usually suitable for night shifts; since night shifts are executed by
different teams.
Another alternative is to commence the works immediately after the end of normal working
hours, or to continue working as in Category 2, and transport the personnel to camp for dinner.
The personnel can then be transported back to the work site to resume working. This is usually
appropriate for teams working long overtime on activities that can be interrupted.
6.3.3.
Category 3 (Long, Uninterruptible Works)
Since the activities in this category take longer times to execute and they can not be interrupted
once started, the strategies for the above categories are not applicable.
Hence, take away food should be supplied to the personnel working extended hours in this
category.
Due to the low nutrition of take away food packages (mainly sandwiches) they should be
supplied twice for a 10-hour shift.
Workers will have their meals taking turns; so that the total meal break for each worker
accumulates to 1-hr for 2 breaks.
No food should be consumed at the workplace and workers should take their breaks in PPE-free
areas.
