LEAD Program Description

Summer Learning

LEAD Program
The LEAD Program allows students to Learn, Experiment, Advance and
Demonstrate different approaches to their learning beyond the regular
school year. This is a project based learning program that utilizes
educational technology (iPads, videos, blogs, etc.) and engages students in
experience-based study.
The Program
Each secondary school site develops their program around educational
passions. Both teachers and students have an opportunity to explore their
eagerness for learning. Students have an opportunity to pursue their project
interests while teachers guide their daily lessons around the four core
curricular subject areas of English/Socials or Math/Science. Another key
piece of the program includes Grade 11 & 12 Peer Tutors who mentor the
Grade 8 & 9 students by helping to facilitate the learning environment.
Assessment and Timing
Student work is displayed during a culmination showcase presentation;
parents and community members are invited to experience individual
student projects. Successful Grade 8 & 9 students receive a grade up to C+
and peer tutors receive credit for a Leadership or Peer Tutoring course. Final
assessment is structured around teacher-created rubrics, allowing for
reflection and aligning with the new learning standards. All students are
completing 80 hours of instruction, from July 6-31, 2015
What does each LEAD site need?
40 Grade 8/9 LEAD students enrolled in 2 courses at 2 credits each
10 Grade 11/12 Peer Tutor students enrolled in one course
o Peer Tutor funding will allocate $133 per student for field trips

Each site collaborates with Student Services to discuss referrals:


o during first semester failure list review meetings and/or second
semester interim/midterm failure list meetings
o during promotion meetings at your site
We will provide instruction to your clerks on how to cross enroll
students to the program which will reduce the need for the
registration forms
Lead Program Referral Criteria
Current Grade 8/9 students
Minimally meeting expectations at their grade level in core classes
Math/Science or English/Social Studies
Have sufficient English Language skills to function independently in the
classroom
Classes are not designed for individualized learning i.e. behavior,
communication, and socialization
Classes are not designed for students on a significantly adapted or
modified program
Program does not support new learning the objective of our referral
programs are to reinforce key learning objectives ensuring success for
the upcoming school year
Students should be able to work independently without EA support
Not open to International/Fee Paying students
Appropriate adaptations in line with the IEP will be considered when
applicable
