2005 CONCACAF GOLD CUP DATES SET
CARIBBEAN QUALIFYING BEGINS THIS MONTH
The road to the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup,to be held in the USA from 6-24
July 2005, begins this October with games in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU).
In addition to crowning the Caribbean champion, the Digicel Cup will qualify
three Caribbean teams to the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Along with the CFU representatives, the CONCACAF Gold Cup will feature
four Central American nations, two invited teams and the three North Zone
squads of Canada, Mexico and USA.
CFU First Round Group F is the first to kick off with games taking place in
St. Kitts & Nevis from 27-31 October 2004.
The following month, the remaining first round CFU groups will take place in
Jamaica (Group A), Martinique (B), Trinidad & Tobago (D) and St. Vincent & The
Grenadines (E) from 10-28 November 2004.
The top two teams from each group will progress, along with Cuba who
received a first round bye, into the CFU Qualifying Second Round that will be composed of home-and-away match-ups on 12 & 19 December 2004. The First Round
Group B winner (Dominica, French Guyana, Guadaloupe or host, Martinique) will
advance directly into the CFU Third Round Series in January 2005.
The Second Round Series victors along with the Group B Winner will progress
to the Third Round of the CFU Digicel Cup that has three home-and-away
encounters on 9 & 16 January 2005.
The Third Round winners will join the host Barbados in the CFU Final Round
of the Digicel Cup from 20-24 February 2005.

The 2005 breakdown will feature
two clubs each from Mexico and the
USA, one team qualifying from the
Caribbean Football Union and three
clubs advancing from the Union
Centroamericana de Ftbols Torneo
Interclubes later this year.
The eight-team Champions Cup
pairings will be determined by a draw
to be held at the offices of CONCACAF
General Secretariat in New York City
in early 2005.
The winner of the 2005 CONCACAF
Champions Cup will qualify to the
next FIFA Club World Championship to
be held in Japan in December 2005.

PRESIDENT WARNER INAUGURATES NEW OFFICE
CONCACAF President Jack A Warner officially opened
a new office for the Unin Centroamericana de Ftbol
(UNCAF) in an inauguration ceremony in Ciudad de
Guatemala, Guatemala on 11 August.
Also present at the inauguration were current UNCAF
General Secretary Rafael Tinoco Kipps and his predecessor, Oscar Thamar.
The office, which as already in active use, serves as the head offices of
UNCAF, which is a regional administrative body of CONCACAF.

QUALIFYING UPDATE
Guatemala, Mexico
and USA have all secured
berths in the CONCACAF
Final Round of qualifying
for World Cup Germany
2006 as they head into
the Match Day Six of the CONCACAF
Semifinal Round next month.
At the conclusion of the Semifinal
Round of Qualifying on 17 November
2004, three more teams will join the
chapines, tricolores and stars & stripes
in the Final Round group of six teams
that runs from 9 February - 12
October 2005. The top three finishers
in this final group will advance directly to the 2006 FIFA World Cup in
Germany.
The CONCACAF fourth-place finisher will compete in a home-and-away
playoff against fifth-place finisher of
the Asian Football Confederation, for
one of the last berths into the FIFA
event. These games will take place in
November 2005.

USA WOMEN TAKE
OLYMPIC GOLD
The USA won the Gold
Medal at the 2004 Womens
Olympic Football Tournament
in Athens, Greece, by defeating Brazil 2:1 in overtime in
the final on 26 August.
Lindsay Tarpleys strike from outside the box in the 39th minute beat
Brazilian goalkeeper Andreia and gave
the stars & stripes a 1:0 lead. Then
Pretinha scored the second half
equaliser for the Brazilians on 73rd
minute for the 1:1 deadlock at the end
of regulation time.
In extra time the USA grabbed the
winning goal through an Abby
Wambach header, from a corner delivered by Kristine Lilly on 118th minute
for the 2:1 final score.
The victory gives the stars & stripes
their second Olympic Gold Medal in
history after achieving the Silver in
Sydney, Australia in 2000 and obtaining
the first gold in Atlanta, Georgia USA
in 1996.
CANADA & USA HEAD TO
U-19 CHAMPIONSHIP
Canada and USA will
compete at the 2004
FIFA Under-19 Womens
World Championship
that will take place in Thailand from
10-27 November.
The maple leafs and stars & stripes
booked their tickets to Thailand after
finishing first and second respectively
at the CONCACAF U-19 Qualifying
Tournament last June.
Canada will compete in Group A at
the second FIFA U-19 World
Championship, alongside Australia,
Germany and the host Thailand, while
the USA is in Group C with Korea
Republic, Spain and Russia.
At the inaugural FIFA U-19 World
Championships, the USA and the host
Canada played in the first-ever AllCONCACAF Final in Edmonton, Alberta
on 1 September 2002, which was won
on a golden goal by the stars &
stripes 1:0.

CUBA, USA TO PLAY IN
FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Cuba and USA were
placed into tough
groups when the draw
for the FIFA Futsal
World Championship Chinese Taipei
2004 took place in Taipei City's Grand
Hotel on 5 September.
USA is in Group C, along with
Italy, Japan and Paraguay, while Cuba
is in Group D joining Argentina, Iran
and Portugal.
The USA's best performances at
the FIFA Futsal World Championships
were third place at the inaugural
tournament in the Netherlands 1989
and then runners-up at the 1992
event in Hong Kong.
In their fourth appearance, the
stars & stripes find themselves in
Group C at the 2004 FIFA World
Championships with Italy, who captured the 2003 UEFA Futsal Title, the
2004 AFC Runners-up Japan and thirdplace finishers in South America's
2003 tournament, Paraguay.
Cuba, which is making its third
consecutive appearance at the FIFA
tournament, will be looking for its
first victory at the 2004 event in
Chinese Taipei. The cubanos will
compete in Group D alongside South
America's 2003 Tournament (and KL
World Fives) Champion Argentina,
five-time AFC Winners Iran and
Portugal, who finished third at the
2000 FIFA World Championships.

COSTA RICA TO STAGE U-20 CENTRAL QUALIFYING
Costa Rica will stage the CONCACAF Under-20 Central American
Zone Qualifying from 16-24 October 2004.
El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama will join the host
in the UNCAF (Union Centroamericana de Ftbol) tournament that
will be held at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San Jos, Costa Rica.
The top two teams from the UNCAF event will progress into Group A of the
2005 CONCACAF U-20 Final Round Qualification alongside the Caribbean Zone
Series 1 Winner and the host USA from 12-16 January in Carson, California.
The CONCACAF U-20 Final Round Group B will take place from 26-30 January
2005 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras and will have Canada, Mexico, Caribbean
Zone Series 2 Winner, Jamaica and the host.
The top two teams from each of the U-20 Final Round Groups will qualify to
the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands.

CANADA TO HOST 2007 FIFA YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
Canada was selected to host the 2007 FIFA World Youth (Under20) World Championship, announced by FIFA Vice-President and
CONCACAF President Jack Warner on 10 August in Toronto, Ontario.
It will be the first time in 24 years that a CONCACAF nation has
staged a FIFA U-20 World Championship.
Canada has also hosted two FIFA Youth Championships (2002 U-19 Women,
1987 U-17 Mens) along with an Olympic Summer Games (Montreal 1976).
The 2007 U-20 Tournament will be the 11th FIFA world championship final to
be held in the CONCACAF region.
This follows three FIFA World Cups (Mexico 1970 and 1986; USA 1994); the
FIFA Womens World Cup (USA 1999, 2003); various youth finals in Canada (FIFA
U-17 World Championship 1987, U-19 Womens World Championship 2002),
Mexico (FIFA World Youth Championship 1983), Trinidad & Tobago (FIFA U-17
World Championship 2001); and Futsal World Championship (Guatemala 2000).
CARIBBEAN NATIONS TO RECEIVE ASSISTANCE
FOLLOWING IMPACT OF HURRICANE IVAN
The FIFA Finance Committee has approved a fund worth one million (US dollars) to help rebuild football in Caribbean countries devastated by Hurricane Ivan.
Through the efforts of FIFA Vice-President and CONCACAF President Jack
Warner, who met with other FIFA officials in Zurich, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica,
Cayman Islands and Bahamas will benefit from the fund which will ensure that
football related activities such as travel arrangements for national teams in
upcoming international tournaments, replacement of equipment, continuation
of courses and other related matters are ensured continuity.
In addition, FIFA will provide US$400,000 to assist with the affected FIFA
Goal projects (offices, training facilities) as well as a further US$400,000 for a
second phase, which will see the construction of other relevant facilities.
Warner revealed too that The Football Association has decided to contribute
10,000 Pounds Sterling towards the rebuilding of the Grenada National Stadium,
while the United States Soccer Federation has also agreed to give US$15,000.

ST. KITTS & NEVIS HOLDS FIFA WORKSHOP
St. Kitts & Nevis Football Association (SKNFA)
held a FIFA Workshop Programme on Long Term
Planning from 25-26 August.
FIFA Development Officer Keith Look Loy guided a
cross-section of the islands football community, led by
SKNFA President Peter Jenkins, through intense deliberations
that produced a strategic plan to guide the games development in St. Kitts & Nevis from 2004 to 2010.
According to the plan, the SKNFA will join an increasing
number of Caribbean Associations that intend to establish
semi-professional mens leagues over the next years. Also
included among the key elements of the plan are the establishment of development programmes for youth and
womens football and a coach education programme. The
plan also focuses on medical issues and the associations
administration and marketing of the game.

USA HALL OF FAME INDUCTS CLASS OF 2004
The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, New York
USA inducted Michelle Akers, Paul Caligiuri and Eric Wynalda
to the Class of 2004, at a ceremony held on 11 October.
Besides scoring the first goal in USA womens team
history in 1985, Akers has played in three FIFA Womens
World Cups and helped lead the stars & stripes to two
championships (1991, 1999) and a gold medal at the 1996
Olympic Games.
Caligiuri has made two FIFA World Cup appearances
(1990, 1994), but is best remembered for scoring a 35yard dipping volley against Trinidad & Tobago in 1989,
that put the USA into the World Cup for the first time
in 40 years.
Wynalda, a veteran of three World Cups (1990, 1994,
1998), is the USAs all-time leading scorer with 34 goals.
PRESIDENT OF BARBADOS F.A. RE-ELECTED
Ronald Jones was re-elected as President of Barbados
Football Association (BFA), for the period of 2004-2008, during the Annual General Meetings at the Hugh Springer
Auditorium on 26 September, by defeating Randy Harris 65
votes to 61.
Other results of the BFA elections include long-time
administrator Keith Barrow earning re-election to the position of Senior Vice-President, and Basil Gittens the Junior
Vice-President.
Curtis Hunte (treasurer), Sylvia Darlington (assistant
treasurer), Charles Husbands (senior assistant secretary) and
Mario Jones (junior assistant secretary) were the council
members returned unopposed, while the floor members
chosen were Shawn Burke, Frank Gill, Hally Haynes, Revere
Richards, Ali Rochester and Andrew Wilkinson.
SAINT LUCIA NAMES NEW GENERAL SECRETARY
Saint Lucia Football Association named Germaine Joseph
as the new General Secretary on 26 August.
Ms. Joseph became the first woman to hold such an
executive position at the Association, on 1 September 2004.
