Uses and Gratification Theory

The uses and gratification theory places the attention of the audience rather than the
media text. By assuming the audience members are not passive, this theory shows that
an audience takes on an active part in what they do with the media text. The theorist
Katz (1959) asked "what people do with media" as opposed to "what media does to
people". This theory indicates that the members of the audience actively chose a
specific media text to suit them. Hence showing media texts compete each other for
the viewer's gratification.
-Satisfying curiosity and general interest
This complies with our audience as the beginning of our film starts with the end
creating a curious audience intrigued to know what happens next. Also the main
themes within our production relate to the viewers as they are using everyday items
and issues involving gender.
Entertainment
-Filling time
-Emotional Release
-Escaping/being diverted from problems
-Relaxing
-Getting intrinsic/cultural/aesthetic enjoyment
All of these aspects comply with our piece as the audience can connect with the
characters within the production as it's a gender based war, allowing the audience to
escape into the reality of the film. This immerses the audience in the film,
momentarily making them forget about their lives and any problems/issues they may
have. This is classed as escapism. As the audience indulges further into the film the
more intrigued and excited they are to see the conclusion at the end and the character
development of the main characters.
Integration and Social identity
-Helping to carry out social roles
-Enabling one to connect with family, friends and society
Our film allows people to connect with their family and friends with in society as it
contains aspects of gender roles that will apply to people. For example the two main
characters are strong females which may help boost the confidence in some female
viewers. In turn with males we see that they are not only strong but persistent as they
do not give up on their mission (beating the girls) which shows determination, this
could again help boost the confidence in some male viewers. This will allow our
audiences carry out social roles as our film revolves around a domestic backdrop
(within a home) and it's an adaptation of children playing with toy guns, with the twist
of not children playing but adults instead.
Personal Identity

-Finding models of behaviour

-Gaining insight into one's self
These aspects of this theory can be applied to our film as the audience can connect
with the characters both male and female as they significant roles though out the film.
The main characters are females with an aim and follow through this shows them to
be independent and powerful, this can influence girls to more like this which is a
positive impact on society as they can be regarded as 'models'. The audience can
relate to the issues and character in the film as they portray everyday life situations
e.g. ex-boyfriends, bad break ups which cause conflict. The audience as determine
themselves whether the behaviour of the character on screen is justified based on the
back story and even from the events on screen. Also the whole theme of the 'gender
war' will relate to the audience as everyone is effected by gender roles in society so
within our film people can determine where they stand in terms on the film itself.
