Day 0 at SSB

(THE DAY HAS ARRIVED) There are three Selection Centres located across the country. These are at Allahabad, Bhopal and Bangalore. Each selection centre consists of four to five Service Selection Boards(SSBs). Your SSB interview will happen at one of these centres. RECEPTION. On the day of arrival you have to report to the Movement Control Office(MCO) at the railaway station. Here, a representative of Selection Centre manning the reception will receive you and direct you to a bus that will take you to the Selection Centre. Those arriving late or by road should proceed directly to the Selection Centre. After reporting you will get sufficient time to settle down. Normally the afternoons are free(Except your interview day). You can make use of this opportunity to visit places of interest, shop and have fun. SCHEDULE AT SSBs. OPENING ADDRESS AND FORM FILLING . The duty officer gives an introductory talk, explaining matters of administrative details, DOs and DONTs and code of conduct at Selection Centre. You are also required to complete documentation including verification of required certificates for age/educational qualifications. All candidates are allotted chest number for further testing. It is important to remember that you are not competing with other candidates. All of you will be assessed against a common standard of suitability and it is possible for everyone in the group to be recommended/Not recommended.

Day 1 at SSB
Stage one selection system includes the following:(a) Intelligence Test (verbal and non verbal). (b) Picture Perception and Description Test Picture is flashed for 30 seconds. The candidates have to broadly note down seven basic parameters viz number of characters, age, sex, mood, action relating to past, present and future for each character in one minute. Time for story writing is four minutes. (c) Discussion of the picture 30 Minutes In this phase batch is divided into different groups. Strength of group is around 15 candidates. Each candidate narrates his individual written story verbatim. Subsequently, in Part-II all the candidates have to discuss amongst themselves and achieve a common consensus about the characters and theme of the story.

Day 2 at SSB
Psychological Tests include the following:-

Thematic Apperception Test 12 Pictures including one blank are shown. Candidates are asked to write a story around what led to the situation? what is going on and what would be the outcome ?. Each Picture is shown for 30 seconds and candidates are asked to write it in 4 minutes. In the blank slide, they have to think a picture of their own choice and write a story around that. Word Association Test In this test, a series of 60 words are shown to the candidates one after another for 15 seconds each. The candidate is required to write down the first thought or idea that comes to his mind. Situation Reaction Test This test consists of 60 routine life situations regarding day to day activities. The situations are printed in a booklet and the candidate is asked to write his reactions by completing the sentences, as to how they would feel, think and act in these situations. Self Description Test Candidate is asked to write five separate paragraphs on each context about the opinion of his parents/guardian, friends, teachers/superiors.

Day 3 at SSB
GTO Day 1 This includes the following:Group Discussion Two topics of common interest (social issues and current events) are discussed. It is an informal discussion and not a debate. Each topic is allotted 20 minutes each. No definite conclusion is required to be deduced. Group planning exercise It comprises of five stages viz., explanation of the model, reading of the narrative by GTO, five minutes for self reading by candidates, 10 minutes for individual written solutions and 20 minutes for group discussion. Narration of the group solution and definite conclusion is required. Progressive group task It is the first outdoor task. A set of four obstacles with progressively increasing level of difficulties are to be completed in 40 to 50 minutes. Structures, helping material and load are provided to the group. Group obstacle race In this task the group is pitched against each other over a set of six obstacles with a snake like load to carry. Half group task It has one obstacle similar to progressive group task with helping material and load to be carried. Group is

divided into two Sub Groups and assigned the same obstacle in turn in such a way that when one group is working, the other is not allowed to watch it. Time allotted to each sub group is 15 minutes. Lecturette It is an individual task and the candidate is required to give a short talk to the group. Three minutes are allowed to prepare any chosen topic from the four given in the Lecturette Cards for the talk. TO Day 2 Individual Obstacles. A set of 10 obstacles is set to be tackled individually. Obstacles are numbered from one to ten, denoting the points each one carries. Each individual is given three minutes. Command Task. Each individual is nominated as commander for one task consisting of one obstacle similar to the Progressive Group Task Time given is 15 minutes. Final Group Task. Task consisting of one obstacle similar to the Progressive Group Task . Time given to complete this task is 15 - 20 minutes

Day 5 at SSB
This includes the following:1. Closing address 2. Conference. 3. Announcement of results. 4. Dispersal. INTERVIEWS:- Interviews are normally conducted in the afternoon by the interviewing officer. The interviews will carry on from day 1 to day 4. You will be interviewed only once and will be informed about it well in advance. The atmosphere throughout the interview is relaxed and informal. The questions are generally based on your everyday experience.

Progressive Group Task.(Group of 20 Candidates). 8. Half Group Task.(Group of 6-7 Candidates). 9. Closing of First Day GTO. Second Day Tasks of GTO Tests: 1. Reporting Usually at 6:00 am in White PT Dress. 2. Introduction by the GTO NCO. 3. Group Discussion. 4. Lecturette. 5. Group Planning Exercise(Military Planning Exercise). 6. Individual Obstacles Task. 7. Command Task. 8. Closing of GTO Tasks.

Please Note, the schedule of tasks in GTO are depend on GTO Officer's Discretion, and can be changed anyway he likes. Command Task Command Task (CT) This test is conducted by Services Selection Board during GTO Tests( that is during 3rd and 4th day of SSB Interview). Command Task is a test conducted by services selection board to assess the leadership quality of the candidate. In this test, the candidate is given chance to act as a commander or leader of the group to perform the given task. The candidate is required to intruct and guide his group partners to work and perform as per the plan of the candidate. Please do not confuse. Here Candidate is YOU. In this task, the GTO or Group Testing Officer gives all the information to the candidate/Commander. GTO will not provide any information to your group members. You(candidate), then will instruct your team members to perform the task sucessfully. Rules for Command Task: 1. Every member of the Group is provided with the chance to act as a Group Leader/Commander. So that every member can show his caliber to perform this task. 2. GTO will explain, about the ground, equipments, Colour Codes and helping materials to you. He will read aloud the rules using his Manual, Please listen it carefully. They will not repeat it. Nor you should ask him for repeat. It is important. 3. You will be free to choose your team mates. You have to select 2 Candidates to carry on the task.

4. The Commander cannot enter the designated ground, nor he is allowed to touch any equipment or help them. 5. You will be provided with only one obstacle.

Final Group Task Final Group Task(FGT) Test: This test is much like Progressive Group Task(PGT Test), which is being conducted on 4rd Day of Services Selection Board. This is the last chance where a candidate can show his caliber to perform this task. Each group is being provided with a wooden Plank(in Hindi Fatta), a wooden Log(in Hindi Balli) , a wooden pole(in hindi Lathha around 5 feet), a Steel Pipe(3 to 4 foot), 2 rope(3 to 5 Feet), a Load(of about 5 Kg. It Can be a small Plastic Drum or a Packet). The Group members, are required to complete the task, by keeping in mind the danger area(Red Colored Area), Blue Colored Area. You should show your qualities, discipline and Officer like Qualities. This task is about set of obstacles in ground in a specified area, in which you and your team members should cross each obstacles defined by set of rules. Also while crossing these obstacles you will be required to carry a load. To cross those obstacles, The time given for this is usually 20 minutes depending on the Group Testing Officer and also based on the difficulty of the task. Unlike Progressive Group task, here you will have only one Obstacle Area. No leader is nominated and the whole group is allowed to participate in this. The person who is having analyzing capability, who can able to apply his basic physics (such as fulcrum, cantilever) in real life, could feel easy to finish these tasks. Also he will be noted as the leader by the Group testing Officer. So, you should speak whatever idea, you have. Just Standing, quite will be negative for you. Group Discussion In General Group Discussion is a qualitative method to obtain in-depth information on concepts and perceptions about a certain topic through spontaneous group discussion of various persons. But a good Group Discussion, is the one, in which all candidates are given chance to express their views. In Services Selection Board, this test is conducted to access the convincing power of the candidate and his spontaneous reactions to the information he is getting in real-time. The Group Discussion is conducted twice in Services Selection Board Interview. The first Group Discussion is on second day. and another is conducted during GTO Tests. During Group Discussion on second day in SSB, their is a panel of 4 to 6 Physiologists. Their eyes are on every one. They will give you a topic and then Firstly they divide the group into two. Then after 20 seconds they sub-divide group into four. Please not, the candidates who are extremely shouting or disturbing the discussion will definitely, get negative marks. You should give chance to others to express their views and be short and give strong point not strong voice. Half Group Task Half Group Task(HGT Test): This test is performed after Progressive Group Task. This Test is similar to Progressive Group Task(PGT Test), the only difference is that, the group of 12 to 14 Candidates are divided into two groups and then the Group task is assigned to both the group. This test aims at identifying Officer Like Qualifies(OLQs) in the candidates. The Groups can be formed in continuous sequence by Chest Numbers or it may be a group of ODD and EVEN Chest Numbers. The both groups are in competition towards each other. But the candidates should not focus on competition but, focus on Behavior, Leadership and OLQs. The Equipments and the Rules are remain same as that of Progressive Group Task(PGT Test). You will be provided with a Plank, a Wooden Pole, a Steel Pole, 2 Ropes and a load. The Candidates are not allowed to step on area colored with RED color. The Candidate, if carrying load, then he/she can not touch the Blue Colored area. Candidate cannot put his feet on Land. But, White colored area is free to use.

The candidate can Jump to cross several small distance obstacles, but it is limited to use up to 4 feet only. Also, you are not allowed to tie the Equipments together to increase the length. Individual Obstacles This test is designed by SSB to access the physical strength, judge any physical abnormality and Acrophobia(Fear of Heights). There are a sequence of Obstacles, which are total 10 in number. This has has to be performed by each individual, individually. Total allowed time is 3 minutes and you have to cross total of these 10 obstacles. Mark for every obstacle is different. You are at liberty to attempt obstacles in your own order. These obstacles carry total of 55 marks. Obstacles starting from first carry 1 mark second carry 2marks and so on up to tenth obstacles, which carry the maximum marks. After completing all the obstacles within time limit, you can re-attempt the obstacles to gain bonus marks. But, this is valid only, when you have completed all the obstacles once. The aim of this test is to access:

Types of obstacles (According to the marks )

High Jump Jump over the barbed wires. Walking over a zig zag beam. Jump over the wooden platforms . Jumping over two ditches with the help of rope Monkey crawling Tarzan Swing Tiger leap . Walking over parallel ropes. Commando walk.

Helpful Guidelines: 1. Prepare your dress in advance, it should be well ironed and neat. Wear it accordingly with proper dressing senses. 2. Listen to the guidelines provided by the GTO very very carefully, since they will not repeat and they will say something that most of the candidates skip to hear or implement. Please beware the guidelines are not always same. 3. Make a good plan to overcome the obstacles . 4. Run fast between the obstacles . 5. Repeat the obstacles only when all the obstacles are completed successfully. 6. While negotiating the obstacles do not show any kind of hesitation, nor stop for a moment before any obstacle. 7. When using Tarzan Swing hold the rope tightly with both hands, else you will injure your palms. Best tip is to hold the rope at upper side as possible and not try to re-hold the rope to upper level while on swing. Lecturettes

Lecturettes(Lecture in Simple English) is a indoor type of test conducted by Services Selection Board. This test is conducted by GTO Officer, during GTO Tests that is on 3rd and 4th Day of SSB Interview. The aim of this test is to verify, the candidate for his capability to speak in front of his team/unit and deliver his thoughts to his men. Services Selection Board assumes, the the candidate who is willing to became an Officer, should also have the capability to give a forceful speech and should have the quality to convince the crowd with this thoughts. The candidate should have a capability to make a Speech in short duration of time and should be able to reflect all the aspects of the topic whether it is negative or it is positive. But don't forget, you should not use negative sentences. You have to make these negative sentences to positive ones. The body posture, action of hands, motion of eyes all are supervision of the GTO Officer. SO, these should be included in your practise so as to reflect your confidence. To become an efficient in this task, you have to do a lot practice. You may create a short group of 2 to 4 candidates and select a topic to deliver speech. Military Planning What is a Group Planning Exercise or Military Planning Exercise (SSB GPE or SSB MPE) ? Group Planning or Military Planning Exercise or Military Planning Exercise is followed after the Group Discussion at the third day of the SSB Interview and Second Day of the GTO Tests. It is a set or problems or critical situations in which the candidate has to put himself and engage his team or group members to find the solution for those problems along with that he/his team should get succeeded in their own problem. It is a situation whether the candidate has to think themselves as leader and to allocate, extract work from the men and materials around him. He should give priority to the situations and analyze that which issues/problems should be solved first and which all should be solved last. You should also be able to allocate the man power efficiently based on the complexity of the problems. Candidate has to focus on all the aspects of the problem and respond accordingly.

Rules for the Military planning exercise of Group planning exercise 1. The candidates will seat in a semi-circle in the sequence of their chest numbers. 2. The GTO will narrate rules of the test followed by the set of problems like a small story with a wooden model/map. i.e. A wooden plan drawn like a map between two towns. The Map/Wooden Board is painted as green (for forest),blue (for water bodies like river, pond etc), Coal-tar roads are painted in black and mud roads in pale yellow color. 3. After narration of the problem, GTO will ask the group for any doubt. 4. GTO will also tell about the time and direction from which we are going. The Directions are also marked on the Map. 5. Each candidate will be provided with the written story; the candidate is required to read it quickly and place the story card by side. 6. The candidate is given time to write down their own individual solution for the said problem under reference. 7. The candidates will be given ten minutes time to discuss about the set of problems and arrive at a group solution, i.e. proper solution to win over all situations. 8. One Candidate from the group will narrate the final concluded situation before the GTO.

Expectation from a Candidate in Military Planning Exercise: 1. In MPE , it is a series of tough situation where the candidate is putting himself, his team in various situations i.e. extracting work from his team by allocating them based on priority of the problem. Various sets judged by GTO are: 2. He will be judged for all the OLQ, possessed by the candidates 3. Whether the candidate observes the analyses the problem well. 4. Whether the candidate allocates work properly to his team mates. 5. Whether the candidate is able to prioritize the problems. 6. Whether the candidate can able to win all the situations in the set of problems 7. Whether he is forceful in putting his point to the group etc. (very important)

Psychological Tests
1. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)- Commonly known as Picture Story writing. TAT is very similar to PPDT, but here the candidates are shown clear pictures, in which the candidate has to

observe it for 30 seconds then needs to write a story on it in four minutes. There are total 12 slides are shown, 11 slides will be shown one by one i.e. after 4 minutes and 30 seconds the next slide will appear. The twelfth slide will be a blank slide where a candidate is supposed to write any story of his own choice. But here candidates will not be marking the no of characters and related information, also there will be no group discussion on it. 2. 3. 4. Situation Reaction Test This test has been designed to access the reaction of the candidate at a particular moment. This test is largely a test of common sense .In every day life one comes across certain unforeseen situations and one is called upon to resolve these or has to find the solution for these and to act in an appropriate manner to meet the requirement of the situation. SSB Provide very short duration of time to think upon a moment and react, thereby to create a spontaneous reaction within a candidate, which he writes to his answer sheet. If you try to think and write, then you will waste the time and will not be able to answer more than 80% questions correctly. At the ssb, a candidate is required to answer 60 SRT Events in 30 minutes of time. The time limit has been purposely reduced so that candidates gives his response without protracted deliberation and gives a spontaneous response. The situation at the test resembles with those confronted by all of us in day to day life. There's no right or wrong to these situations, since they are purely based on the person's personal perception. It is generally known carries an equal importance in ones recommendation. Tips: Write minimum possible words in your response , using words and punctuation marks .Don't use telegraphic/Bookish language. Don't write merely reactions ,write the full action .Candidate has to attend all the SRT in the given time and therefore the candidates should attempt the easier first and then the question he finds difficult. Your response should reflect qualities like cooperative attitude ,positive approach. You may find some SRT's which are repeated. Therefore you have to be cautious in not contradict to solution you have given to it. Attempt as much as you can . Situation Reaction Test Examples: 1. He was traveling to his SSB centre, and just before reaching the station, he found that his suitcase is lost 2. He had exams the next day & the road to his school was flooded with continuous rain for last two days 3. Severe drought conditions were prevailing in your district. 4. You did something wrong what you shouldn't have done. You 5. You had boarded a wrong train and only two minutes were left for the right train to start 6. He and his friends are traveling from a speedy train when his friend looks out of window and gets hit by a pole.He. 7. He and his father were going on a scooter when they met with an accident. Both of them get hurt but his father is severely injured and on calling for help no turns up,he. 8. He was forced to join the Railways but he was really not interested. He. 9. Due to cyclone his family lost all their possession and needed a fresh start. As the eldest son he. 10. He was on his way to home and suddenly it started raining heavily? He. 11. He was watching a movie in the cinema hall. He sees a snake in front of his legs. He. 12. In his train compartment, two gunmen force passengers to give their belongings. He. 13. The perception reflects the candidate's personality traits and thus help SSB Test Officers to get deep into your character. You should never try learn the sentences from books or magazines. This will spoil your interview. Though you should practice regularly. The following points should be noted while practicing for WAT Test for SSB Interview:

You will have to Respond to the word shown with in 15 Seconds. Word will be shown for 5 Seconds It is not a test of English language or grammar.Your first response should be most natural to a person and closer to your actual personality. Be positive. Frame negative words in positive sentences. Be brief, do not write long sentences. Do not use too many Is. Use past tense or present tense. Do not use Future. The words may or may not should not be used. Try to avoid them

The words can be used in its other forms also that is Noun, verb, adjective, change of gender/tense. Use of names is also permitted. Make complete sentence. However if time is short the idea or thought should be conveyed. Ensure serial number of the word matches with your answer serial number. Else every thing will be chaos. Avoid making sentence with I, Me, Myself, Mine. Use third person that is. He, She, Them etc. Dont give advisory remarks that is Should, Could, would etc. Preferably do not start sentence with be or dont be. Avoid phrases idioms or factual statements. Avoid negative sentences or anti social responses. Need not write the word before writing the sentence. Project your character qualities. Be legible. The sentence should be readable.
