Nahmada hu wa nusali ala rasoolahil kareem, Amma baad, faoothobila hi minash shaytaanir rajeem. Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh, Praise be to Allaah, we praise Him and seek His help. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our evil deeds. Whomever Allaah guides cannot be led astray, and whomever He leaves astray, cannot be guided. I bear witness that there is no deity, no god, no object worthy of worship except Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We will continue our series on the topic of one of the greatest forms of worship, at-Dua. We briefly discussed and focused on one ayah of the Quran where Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us in the Quran, in surah Ghafir, surah 40, ayah 60:

And your Lord says: "Call on Me (Make dua to Me); I will (of a surety) respond to you. Verily those who are too arrogant to worship Me will enter the Fire of Hell, humiliated. " (Quran 40:60) And we understood from this ayah as well as several hadith that dua is a form of worship. And just how with other forms of worship, it must be done purely for the sake of Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala and done according to the Quran and sunnah. We cannot simply make up our own rules for acts of worship similar to how you cannot stand up and say I am going to pray 7 rakat salah for Maghrib. We also realize from this ayah that making dua to Allah is a command. Not optional. Types of Dua Moving on; When we look at the Quran and sunnah, we come to realize that there are two types of dua. The first is which most people are familiar with, known as dua al-masalah, the dua of asking. This is when a person asks to be given something that is of benefit

to him, or asks that some harm be removed from him. For example Rabbana atina fidunya hasanatanw wa fil akhiratee hasanatanw wakeena azabunaar. We are asking Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala to give us good in this world, and good in the hereafter, and to save us from the Hell-Fire. The second type of dua is known as dua al-ibadah, the dua of worship. This type of dua is included in every act of worship we do. Every praise we mention for Allah and every prayer we perform is implying that we are saying O Allah! I am doing this act of worship because you are All-Mighty and All-Powerful! You are the only one that deserves all types of praise! O Allah, accept this act from me!. So for example when we say SubhanAllah, or Alhumdullilah, or perform salah, or gives zakat, or fasts; these are all examples of dua al-ibadah. From this we can say there are 4 categories of people. The first are those that combine both types of dua, al-ibadah and al-masalah, and do it for Allah only. An example of this combined effort can be seen in Surah Fatiha, surah 1, ayah 5, what means: You (alone) do we worship, and You alone do we seek help from. (Quran 1:5). The second category are those that perform both forms of dua, but not to Allah. These are not Muslims as they are calling on false deities or not calling on anything such as the atheists, communists or agnostics. The third category are those that practice dua al-ibadah, for example performing salah and doing dhikr, but ignores dua al-masalah, and never asks of Allah. Either because they are lazy, or because they have incorrect beliefs that we should be satisfied with what Allah has decreed and not ask for anything. This is a deviation and a serious mistake. Allah has commanded us to ask of Him. Allah can give us anything. We even find that all prophets without exception made dua to Allah. The fourth category are those that practice dua al-masalah, always ask of Allah, but ignore dua al-ibadah, for example they do not fast, they do not perform salah, or do not pay the zakat. This is clearly someone who is selfish and is only striving to satisfy themselves in this world. Unfortunately, there are many Muslims today that are like this, where you hear statements like it is the intention that counts, and use this as an excuse to leave worshipping Allah. The one who

does this, is like Iblis, Satan himself. He was expelled from Paradise because he left dua al-ibadah out of arrogance, but then he made dua to Allah, dua almasalah to allow him to live until the Day of Judgement. And Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala granted him his dua. Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us in surah al-Baqarah, surah 2, ayah 200-202, what could mean: There are men who say: "Our Lord! Give us (Thy bounties) in this world!" but they will have no portion in the Hereafter. (2:200) And there are men who say: "Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and defend us from the torment of the Fire!" (2:201) To these will be allotted what they have earned; and Allah is quick in account. (2:202) (Quran 2:200-202) When we make Dua to Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala we have the highest of hopes that Allah will give us what we have asked for. But there are other benefits as well. 1. Allah is close to the one making Dua because Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us in the Quran in surah al-Baqarah, surah 2, ayah 186: When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me (Quran 2:186) Notice how Allah mentions His responding to our dua when we call upon Him Subhaanahu wa ta'ala immediately after stating that He is close to us. This shows that making dua to Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala is a way that we can come closer to Allah, and one of the ways that Allah will come closer to us InshaAllah. 2. Dua is the only cause of Allahs concern for us because Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala tells us in surah al-Furqan, surah 25, ayah 77, what could mean: Say (O Muhammad): My Lord only pays attention to you because of your dua to Him. But now you have indeed rejected (Him), so the (torment) will be yours permanently. (Quran 25:77)

One of the salaf (the early generation of the Muslims) said: It has reached me that the meaning of this verse is: I have not created you because I have a need for you, I have only created you so that you may ask Me, so I will forgive you and give you what you ask (Tafsir al-Qurtbui, 13/83). 3. Dua is an indication of Allahs generosity as one of Allahs names is alKarim, The Ever-Generous. The concept of dua proves the extreme and infinite Generosity of Allah as every single created being asks Allah, day and night, for their needs and Allah gives and gives and gives. As Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala has told us in surah al-Rahman, surah 55, ayah 29, what could mean: Whosoever is in the heavens and on earth begs of Him (its needs from Him). Every day He has a matter to bring forth (such as giving honour to some, disgrace to some, life to some, death to some, etc.)! (Quran 55:29) This is also proven in the hadith narrated by abd ibn Humayd that the Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: When one of you asks something (from Allah), then let him be plentiful (in what he asks for), for indeed he is asking his Lord. 4. Dua is a sign of humility because a person shows his own weakness to his Creator Subhaanahu wa ta'ala and frees himself from arrogance. This is why Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala says in surah Ghafir, surah 40, ayah 60, what could mean: And your Lord says: "Call on Me (Make dua to Me); I will (of a surety) respond to you. Verily those who are too arrogant to worship Me will enter the Fire of Hell, humiliated. (Quran 40:60) 5. Dua repels Allahs anger as it is narrated by Abu Huraira radi Allahu anhu that the Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: Verily, the person who does not ask Allah, Allah gets angry at him. When a person leaves dua, he is leaving the noblest act of worship. If someone leaves dua because they feel they dont need Allahs help, then this could even be considered as a type of disbelief in Allah.

A poet wrote about this hadith and said Allah gets angry if you stop asking Him, and the son of Adam, yani humans, when he is asked, gets angry! Another hadith that shows that Allah loves to be asked is narrated by Jabir ibn Abdillah and reported by Ubadah ibn Samit, that the Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: There is no Muslim on the face of the earth that asks Allah for anything except that Allah gives it to him, or averts from him a similar evil, as long as he does not ask for something evil or for breaking the ties of kinship. It is important to note here that since leaving dua will earn Allahs anger, it should reinforce and be sufficient evidence that dua is obligatory on us. 6. Dua is a cause of being saved from the hell-fire. We will see in the following hadith, reported by Muslim, that since dua is the highest form of worship, if a person leaves dua then he has left worshipping Allah, and will then enter the fire of Hell. Aishah radi Allahu anha asked the Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam about a person who used to do good, but did not accept Islam. She said: O Messenger of Allah, Ibn Judan used to, in the days of Jahiliyyah, take care of his relatives and feed the poor. Will (his actions) be of any benefit to him? So the Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam responded: No, O Aiishah! For never did he say: O Allah! Forgive me my sins on the Day of Judgement. He would enter the hell-fire because he never made dua to Allah. It also implies that he did not accept Islam simply because he did not ask Allah for forgiveness. 7. Leaving dua is a sign of laziness because it is reported by Ibn Hibban radi Allahu anhu that the Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: The most incapable (or lazy) person is he who does not make dua, and the most miserly is he who does not give salaam. How much energy does it take to make dua? The Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam spoke the truth; the person who is not asking Allah is definitely the most lazy and incapable.

8. The reward of dua is guaranteed as we mentioned in the hadith narrated by Jabir ibn Abdillah that the Prophet Sal Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: There is no Muslim on the face of the earth that asks Allah for anything except that Allah gives it to him, or averts from him a similar evil, as long as he does not ask for something evil or for breaking the ties of kinship. This is a promise and clear proof that Allah has taken it upon Himself Subhaanahu wa ta'ala to respond to the dua of every person who asks Him. Ibn Hajr stated: Every single person that makes dua will be responded to, but the actual responses are different. Sometimes, the exact matter that was prayed for is given, and sometimes, something equivalent to it is given. (Fath al-Bari, 11/95) It is important to note here that the scholars of Islam generally advice when making dua to not ask for anything specific, unless you know that it is something that will please Allah and will benefit you. And if you do not know if it will please Allah or benefit you, then make dua al-Istikhara, which we will InshaAllah talk about in more details in a future lecture. For example, if you want to get married, this is something that pleases Allah because it is part of al-Islam. And it will subsequently benefit you as well. So you can make dua to Allah, O Allah! Help me get married. But now if you are interested in married fulaan bin fulaan, a specific person, you dont know if this person will be of benefit to you, and your deen, or if this person will be a cause for you to go astray. So make dua al-Istikhara and put the matter in Allahs hands. In very brief, to do Istikhara, you pray 2 rakah, then make the dua al-Istikhara which in essence is asking Allah that O Allah, you know, I do not know, if my marrying fulaan bin fulaan is better for me in my dunya and akhira, then make it easy for me, and if it is not better for me in my dunya and akhira, then take me away from it, and take it away from me. Now after you make this dua, you continue with your decision and leave the matter to Allah. A common misunderstanding is that people will only pray this just before sleeping, or wait to see a dream with something white, or something green. This is not the way the prophet or the companions performed or understood dua alIstikhara. Simply perform the dua anytime after you have made your decision,

Document1

then after the dua continue with your decision. The matter will either be easy or difficult. That is the answer to your dua. 9. There are many more points we could discuss, but we will end with one final point InshaAllah. After hearing all of these benefits you would assume that something that has so many benefits would be very difficult to do. But the last benefit I want to discuss today is that making dua is one of the easiest acts of worship. It takes almost no energy at all. It takes almost no time at all. You will find the dying person making dua. They are suffering from the pangs of death, yet they can make dua still. Then what about us, who are Alhumdullilah healthy and young? Dua is also easy because it is not restricted to a specific place, or a certain time, or only for men, or only for the young, or old, or rich, or poor, or the scholar rather it is something you and I can do at any time, in any place, and no one can forcibly stop you. Someone can tie you up and prevent you from doing wudhu, and from praying and reciting Quran. But can you be stopped from making dua? All we need is an attentive heart, a humble soul and a little knowledge, and we can worship Allah, which in and of itself is a benefit, and also gain benefit for ourselves in this dunya and akhira InshaAllah. We will end with that today InshaAllah. We ask Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala to guide us and to accept our dua. Ameen. We ask Allah Subhaanahu wa ta'ala to forgive our sins and mistakes. Ameen. We ask Allah to give us the best in this dunya and the best in the akhira. Ameen. And we ask Allah to ease the situation of all Muslims around the world. Ameen. Subhaanaka Allaahumma wa bihamdika, 'ash-hadu 'an laa 'ilaaha 'illaa 'Anta, 'astaghfiruka wa 'atoobu 'ilayka
