Rifampicin: Uses, Effects, and Care

Rifampicin is an antitubercular drug used to treat pulmonary tuberculosis. It works by inhibiting DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, impairing RNA synthesis and killing bacteria. Common side effects include flu-like symptoms, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, and discoloration of body fluids like urine, feces, saliva, sweat and earwax. Nurses should monitor the patient's condition before and during therapy and watch for signs of hepatic impairment or adverse drug reactions. Patients are instructed to take the drug with meals to reduce GI upset and avoid alcohol while taking rifampicin.
