Butterfly Diversity in Small Forest Patches

This document summarizes a study on the biodiversity of butterflies found in small forest patches in Costa Rica compared to a larger forest patch. The researchers used fruit-baited traps to survey butterfly diversity in seven small patches ranging from 0.5-6.5 hectares and one larger 100 hectare patch. They found that even recently isolated patches retained surprisingly depauperate butterfly faunas relative to the larger patch. This suggests that if butterflies indicate diversity of other small organisms, preservation may require larger patches than expected. They also surveyed a botanical garden between the large and small patches, finding butterflies associated with forest interior, suggesting corridors could aid connectivity.
