Process Modelling & Simulation 314, Semester 1, 2013 Microwave Heating Experimental Data Equipment and Material Information

The document describes an experiment that measured the temperature of water over time when heated in a microwave oven at different power settings. It provides details on the microwave oven power, batch vessel used to hold the water, and operational notes on the temperature measurements. Temperature data is presented from 6 experiments with different masses of water and microwave power settings of high, medium and low. The data is also plotted on a graph with process fluid temperature over time.

Operational notes Process fluid temperature was measured by an infra-red (IR) thermometer from the outside of the batch vessel. The IR thermometer was calibrated against a standard thermometer at about 55C by adjusting the emissivity. The measurement error was approximately 3C. The batch vessel was placed in the same position in the apparatus for each test. The oven wall temperature was measured from time to time during the experiment; linear interpolation was used to fill in missing values. The lid rested lightly on top of the batch vessel, so that if any vapour was produced it was mostly contained inside the batch vessel, and the vessel contents did not become pressurised.
