Summary of Thesis: The topic of my thesis was the optimal share of real estate in the portfolio of Dutch investors. At that time, there was not yet a more or less reliable index for real estate assets like the ROZ-index today. Only later I developed an interest in aviation research which has resulted in articles (often with co-authors) in journals such as Regional Studies, Journal of Air Transport Management, Journal of Economic and Social Geography (TESG), ESB, Geografie, Rooilijn and a number of books and reports (such as the preliminary cost-benefit analysis of the extension of Schiphol Airport).
Your relationship with Aerius:
Unfortunately, I don’t have much time to attend the activities of Aerius (such as study trips and lectures) but I have contributed to Aerlines together with co-authors. Given my interest in aviation (research) I like to keep informed of what is going on in the field.

Job Contents: Our unit is part of the Directie Ruimtelijk Economisch Beleid of our Ministry, and my job is to identify trends and to provide and to comment on research output that is relevant for decision-making in the policy areas (including for example, Schiphol).

Last book: 31 Songs by Nick Hornby. As always Hornby (Fever Pitch, High Fidelity, About a boy) combines one of his fascinations (in this case popular music) with a deeply personal account of events in his life.

Food: A ritual every Saturday (if I am in town): a white bun with herring (with onions of course) followed by a white bun with sprot from my neighborhood fish seller. There is nothing like it!.
You can wake me up for: my beautiful daughter Lieve (7 months old). Unfortunately, she realizes this far too often.
City: Maputo (capital of Mozambique).
Country: Spain
Season: Not one in particular, I live close to the beach and all seasons have their charm.
Holiday: There were many good ones, but a hiking holiday in Andalusia together with my girl friend was one of the best. In one week we only met three people when following our trail. Afterwards, we had a very nice time in Seville.
Best flight: For a number of years I used to lecture a few times a year in Cambridge (England). Suckling Airways (now Scott Airways) offered flights with a 20- seat airplane from Schiphol to the small airport of Cambridge. On board the stewardess served what looked like home-made sandwiches and plenty of drinks. Great and personal service you can only hope for at other airlines. I was once told that Suckling was founded by a husband (the pilot) and wife (the stewardess) and they could be right. I wonder what became of them.
Worst flight: My worst flight was probably a connecting flight to University Park, Pennsylvania with US Air. Soon after we got our drinks, the turbulence got so bad that it starting raining ice cubes in the cabin. A number of people started panicking and some were sick. I was glad when we hit the tarmac.
