Your current strengths

The next activity is to look at particular things you think you are good at. Look at the list below.

It lists some of the things which you will have to do during your course and also some of the things you might do in your own time.

Go through the list and decide those things which you CAN easily do and those which you need to improve.

Pick the things you can do, and the ones you can't.

Follow-up: When you've looked at these statements you'll have learnt a few things about yourself if you are honest. Make the most of what you discover: push yourself that little bit further.

What are you going to do about the things you haven't ticked? Does it matter if you can't do these things? You'll have to decide sooner or later!

Your tutors have the experience to help you learn best so be prepared to take advice. When you are starting something new you will need to think about the best ways of finding out and learning new things.

Have a look at this list and see where you feel most confident. Rate yourself from 1 to 5. How good are you at:

1. Listening to and acting on verbal instructions 2. Following written instructions 3. Using diagrams 4. Understanding problems 5. Memorising information 6. Reading material for reference

7. Using reference materials or manuals 8. Using technology to get information 9. Analysing information 10. Asking for help from people you know 11. Asking for help from people you don't know 12. Asking for information over the phone 13. Dealing with people you know on the phone 14. Dealing with people you don't know on the phone 15. Going to new places for help or information 16. Writing letters to ask for information

What are you going to do about the bits you find hard? Think of ways to overcome some of the difficulties it might be quite easy!

Follow-up: Try to get more practice where you scored low. Check how your friends got on! Compare notes. Discuss ways of improving your score.

Talk about your results with your tutor, and with your friends.

It doesn't matter if you're not good at all these things.
