Course Syllabus for DME352 Machine Elements Design Semester 1, 2013-14 Instructor: Prof. Oscar K.S.

HUI Email: kshui@hangyang.ac.kr Office hours: by email appointment/ walk-in Room: Engineering Annex Building, 612-2 http://personal.cityu.edu.hk/~kwanshui/index.htm Course description: Design and analysis of machine element including 1) shafts and shafts components, 2) screws, fasteners, 3) rolling-contact bearings, 4) gears, and 5) spur and helical gears. An integrated approach is employed where components functionality and survivability at system level are part of the design scheme. Case studies are conducted to reinforce the concepts and practicality behind the design and analysis of components and their roles at assembly or system level. Engineering fundamentals such as materials engineering, solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, and dynamics, will be implemented in the design process. Prerequisites by topic: 1. Concepts of stress, strain and their relationships 2. Axial, bending, torsion, shear loads and their combinations Textbook: Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design, 9th Edition (McGraw-Hill). Course objectives/Student learning outcomes: After completion of this class, students will be able to: Review concepts of statics and strength of materials used to determine the stress, strain and deflection of one dimensional structure. Learn fundamental approaches to failure prevention for static and repeated loading. Consider the design of common machine elements such as shafts, screws, fasteners, bearings, and gears. Develop technical solutions for mechanical components and assemblies that are capable of efficiently performing specific tasks. Identify loadings of machine elements and perform stress analysis according to design criteria and specified safety factors. Select appropriate materials for the designed machine component. Solve an open-ended design problem involving cost, drawings, and structural analysis.

These abilities will be demonstrated through course homework, quizzes and exams. Assessment/Grading policy: Attendance: 10%; Homework: 10%; Midterm exam: 40%; Final exam: 40% Page 1 of 2
