RAID 0 & RAID 1 Configurations :

The Sil 3112A chipset supports Serial ATA hard disk drives. For optimal performance, install identical drives of the same model and capacity when creating RAID sets. What is RAID 0 & RAID 1? If you are creating a RAID 0(striping) array for performance, use two new drives. If you are creating a RAID1 (mirroring) array for protection, you can use two new drives or use an existing drive and a new drives (the new drives must be of the same size or larger than the existing drive). If you use two drives with different sizes, the smaller capacity hard disk will be the base storage size. For example, hard disk A with an 80GB storage capacity and hard disk B with 60GB storage capacity for your RAID1 set will be 60 GB.

Follow these steps to install the hard disks for RAID configuration. 1. Install the Serial ATA hard disk into the drive bays. 2. Connect one Serial ATA HDD to each Serial ATA connector, using separate serial ATA cables. 3. Connect the power cable to the power connector on each drive. 4. Proceed to Creating and Deleting Raid sets for the next procedure.

11

Creating & Deleting RAID Sets:

Creating and deleting RAID sets is a built-in function found in the BIOS. The following sub-sections describe how to use the RAID Configuration Utility.

Loading the RAID Configuration Utility 1. During POST, pressCTRLS [F4] to enter RAID Configuration Utility. The following menu options will appear.

2. Select Create RAID Set.

12

3. Choose either a Striped or Mirrored RAID Set.

Striped (RAID 0)

Mirrored (RAID 1)

4. Select if you want the utility to Auto Configure the RAID set.

13

5. The utility will ask Are You Sure (Y/N) before completing the configuration. Press [Y] to confirm or [N] to go back to the configuration options.

6. If you want to manually configure the RAID set. For Striped Sets, you can change the chunk size. For Mirrored Sets, you assign which is the Source and Target drives, as well as if you want a Disk Copy.

14

What is a chunk? The chunk size is the stripe on each disk. It is the unit of storage equivalent to one strip on a RAID 0 set. Available chunk sizes: 248163264128 When manually setting the chunk size for your RAID, it is recommended to use the smaller chunk size for server applications and the larger chunk size for AV applications. What is Disk Copy? If the disk assigned as the source disk has been partitioned and has data stored on it, and a second disk is added, the data on the source Drive can be copied to the destination drive so the disks are identical, and all subsequent data will be written to both drives as a Mirrored set. If, however, the source disk does not have data stored on it, there is no need for Disk Copy.

15

7. The utility will ask Are You Sure (Y/N) ? before completing the configuration. Press [Y] to confirm or [N] to go back to the configuration options.

Deleting RAID Sets 1. To remove one or more RAID sets, select Delete RAID Set and Set (Number)

2. Select desired set and press [Y] when asked Are You SureY/N.

16

Resolving Conflict When a RAID set is created the metadata written to the disk includes drive connection information (Primary Channel, Secondary Channel). If after a disk failure, the replacement disk was previously part of a RAID set (or used in another system), it may have conflicting metadata, specifically in reference to the drive connection information if so, and this will prohibit the RAID set from being either created or rebuilt. In order for the RAID set to function properly, this old metadata must be first overwritten with the new metadata, including the correct drive connection information, will be written to the replacement disk. 1. Select the Resolving conflicts

2. Select the Delete RAID SET and Chose Set 0
