Medicines are chemicals that help to cure infections and maintain our health and well being. Medicines can be obtained from natural sources or synthetic chemicals. Any chemical that is used as medicine is called a drug. Medicines that are obtained from plants and animals are called traditional medicines.
Traditional medicines
There is a wide range of traditional medicines. Each community has its own range of medicines to cure and maintain good health. Usually, specific parts of plants like the leaves, flowers, roots, stems, seeds, bark, fruits and sap are used as traditional medicines. Before being consumed, traditional medicines are usually boiled, crushed, ground or made into paste. Traditional medicines are consumed in large quantities and over a longer period because the active ingredients are not concentrated. Some traditional medicines are consumed as nutritious food and taken daily due to their mild effects.
