1 General 1.1 Description A. Perform work required to complete the Bi-fold Hangar Doors indicated by the Contract Documents including supplementary items and accessories necessary for complete installation.
B. All of the Contract Documents, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 1, General Requirements, apply to the work of this section.
1.2 Related Sections
A. Other Specification Sections, which directly relate to the work of this Section include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following.
1. Miscellaneous Metals; metal framing and supports.
2. Painting; field painting.
3. Electrical; wiring.
1.3 Submittals A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data and installation instructions. Include both published data and any specific data prepared for this Project.
B. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings for approval prior to fabrication.
Include detailed plans, elevations, details of framing members, required clearances, anchors and accessories. Include relationship with adjacent materials. The make and type of door, operators and controls shall be clearly shown. Door weight, method of suspension, operation and all fastenings shall be indicated. Doors shall be marked on shop drawings to agree with numbering on Architect’s drawings.
C. Operating Instructions: Submit 2 copies (for each door) of manufacturer’s
operating instructions and maintenance data/manual.
D. Warning Labels: Furnish warning labels for any potentially hazardous locations related to the operation of the door.
E. Provide setting drawings, templates and directions for installation of
anchorage devices. 1.4 Quality Assurance A. Manufacturer: Bi-fold hangar doors shall be manufactured by a firm with a minimum of 30 years documented experience in the fabrication and installation of the types of doors specified herein.
B. Installer: An authorized representative of the manufacturer shall perform
installation of bi-fold hangar doors.
C. Single-Source Responsibility: Provide each vertical bi-fold doors as a complete
unit produced by a single manufacturer, including frames, sections bracket guides, tracks and all parts required to complete assembly.
D. Design Criteria
1. Shall withstand dead load, seismic forces and design loads due to pressure and suction of wind calculated in accordance with applicable sections of the building code.
2. Wind Loading: Design and reinforce to withstand wind loading pressure
as required by codes and as indicated on Structural Drawings, plus the dead load of the door.
1.5 Delivery, Storage and Handling
A. Deliver materials and products in manufacturer’s labeled protective packages. Store and handle in strict compliance with manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations. Protect from damage from weather, excessive temperatures and construction operations.
B. Furnish inserts and anchoring devices that must be set in concrete or built into the building structure for unit installation. Coordinate delivery of these devices with other work to avoid delay.
1.6 Warranty A. The manufacturer shall guarantee each hangar door for one year from the date of substantial completion of the building against all defects in material or workmanship or problems, which arise through the normal anticipated usage of the door. 2 Products 2.1 Acceptable Manufacturer Products of the following manufacturer are acceptable, provided they comply with the Contract Documents.

2.2 Product Model
A. The door shall provide a clear opening as indicated on the Construction Drawings prepared by the Architect.
B. The door framework is to be welded Aluminum sections engineered by the
door manufacturer as required. The door shall be engineered to resist all anticipated loads without sagging, bowing or conflicting with its smooth and efficient operation. The design shall be furnished, approved and sealed by a professional engineer registered in destination state (if required).
C. The door is to be equipped with a completely pre-wired bottom AC drive,
including all necessary mounting hardware, limit switches, and upper over- ride limit to prevent the door from traveling beyond designed opening height.
D. Button rollers shall have mask bearings (extra heavy duty roller bearings) on 3” wheels. Lifting mechanisms and components shall be designed with a 5.1 safety factor.
E. The door shall be bi-fold canopy type and shall be electrically operated. The electrical operator and controls shall be the products of the manufacturer’s normally engaged company for the production of such equipment. The electrical operator and controls shall be the manufacturer’s latest design.
F. The aluminum doors shall supplied in mill finish and assembled into welded frames of 6061 T-6 aluminum.
G. The door shall be equipped with neoprene weather stripping at heads and jambs. The weather stripping at the head shall be installed to prevent the flow of water into the door installation. Sills shall have a special fabric reinforced high-grade rubber astragal.
H. The construction and materials of the door shall be standard of the
manufacturer, but must meet the minimum structural requirements of the building area codes as specified by Architect. I. Electric Motor Operation: Provide UL listed electric operator, size and type as recommended by manufacturer.
1) The motor shall be located on the bottom section of the door.
2) Aluminum Door controls shall be Variable speed AC-Drive 3
(button) push-button type with Up – Stop – Down positions with automatic latches that activate when the door is fully closed. The door must stop before reversing direction. Also provide two (2) remote controls for the door. The door shall be capable of being operated from one side of the door.
3) All electrical controls and devices shall conform to the
requirements of the current National Electrical Code.
a) Electrical: Motor controller enclosure, 3 button Control
Station,AC- Drive and all electrical components shall be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
4) Input voltage shall be 220 volts single phase or as specified by
the door manufacturer.
a) Electrical Motor: 220 volts, single phase, capacity as
recommended and provided by the hangar door manufacturer for door size and weight.
5) The gear motor is to be equipped with an electric brake.
6) Provide a magnetic starter with 110-volt control unit. Provide a
heavy-duty weatherproof limit switch.
7) All controls shall be pre-wired and factory tested.
8) Upper over ride: This safety feature is designed to prevent the
door from traveling beyond its clear opening height. If the door passes its full clear opening height, it will activate the override and stop the door automatically.
9) Side Lock Switches: On manual lock systems these switches are
designed to prevent the door from operating while the side locks are set.
10) Remote Control allows for easy opening and closing (to include two transmitters ,a receiver and a remote antenna)
J. Lift cables are to be fastened to the bottom of hinge, thereby transmitting
forces directly to the header of the building, thus relieving the door of unnecessary stresses. Cables are to be fastened to the cable drum at the bottom cord by means of a welding ring on the drum, thereby permitting drive shaft cable to have ¼ turn of free play without danger of cutting lift cables. Cables shall not pass through pulleys, thereby eliminating maintenance and extending cable life. K. The drive shaft shall be mounted on the bottom cord of the door, running continuously along the entire width of the door. The drive shaft shall be attached to the door frame, with bearing mounts wherever there is a cable drum installed, to minimize stress on the shaft. The cable drums are to be an integral part of the drive shafts, thereby, guaranteeing an even lift of the door at all times.
3 Execution 3.1 Preparation A. Coordinate requirements of insert and anchorage device installation with concrete contractor and building structural frame contractor.
B. Take field dimensions and examine conditions of substrates, supports and
other conditions under which this work is to be performed. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.
3.2 Installation A. Supervision of assembly and erection by door manufacturers personnel or authorized installer
B. Strictly comply with the manufacturer’s installation instructions and
recommendations. Coordinate installation with adjacent work to ensure proper clearances and allow for maintenance.
C. Instruct Owner’s personnel in the proper operating procedures and
maintenance schedule.
3.3 Adjusting and Clearing
A. Test bi-fold doors for proper operation and adjust as necessary to provide proper operation without binding or distortion.
B. Touch-up damaged coatings and finishes and repair minor damage. Clean the exposed surface using non-abrasive materials and methods recommended by manufacturer of material or product being cleaned.
