The OSI model is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the communication functions of a telecommunication or computing system without regard to their underlying internal structure and technology. It defines seven layers, with each layer building on the services provided by the previous one. The layers are the physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation and application layers. Each layer provides services for the layer above and receives services from the layer below.
