Walhalla Gold Mine

There are two route options provided to reach the historic township of Walhalla from Melbourne. The fastest route takes about 2 hours via CityLink, EastLink and the Monash Freeway, exiting at Moe and following signs through Moe and Erica. The scenic route takes around 3.5 hours via the Maroondah Highway, Warburton Highway, and Powelltown, with options to pass through Noojee, Willow Grove or Tanjil Bren before turning right at Rawson and left at Walhalla. GPS is not recommended as the township is well-signposted; following signs and using a map is advised instead.

Directions to

Walhalla Historic Township.

From Melbourne - Fastest Route (just over 2 hours)


CityLink or EastLink to Monash Freeway [M1]. Follow signs to Warragul/Moe. Exit M1 at Moe.
Follow signs through Moe to Erica/Rawson [C466] and Walhalla. Turn right to Rawson 3km beyond
Erica [C481] then left to Walhalla 1km beyond Rawson [C461]. These turns are signposted.
From Melbourne - Scenic Route (about 3.5 hours)
Maroondah Hwy [route 34] to Lilydale, turn right onto Warburton Hwy [B380] for Yarra Junction.
At Yarra Junction turn right for Powelltown/Noojee [C425].
Option A;
After Noojee [12km] turn right to Willow Grove [C465], after Willow Grove turn left for
Erica/Rawson and Walhalla [C466]. Turn right to Rawson 3km beyond Erica then left to Walhalla
1km beyond Rawson [C461]. These turns are signposted.
Option B:
After Noojee [12km] continue straight ahead to Icy Creek & Tanjil Bren [C426]. Beyond Tanjil Bren
continue straight ahead at Mt Baw Baw intersection. Mt Baw Baw is 5km from this intersection and
wheel chains must be carried for entry to the ski resort for the snow season. Note that the South
Face Road [25km] is UNSEALED. At the T intersection with Thomson Valley Rd [C481] turn right
heading towards Erica, then left to Rawson/Walhalla. Turn left to Walhalla 1km beyond Rawson
[C461]. These turns are signposted.

IMPORTANT: We do NOT advise the use of GPS or Google Maps Route Planners.
Walhalla is well signposted, so we recommend the old fashioned methods of following the
signs and using a map!
