Astherigorofourstudentstandardshavechanged,sohasourteachingmethods,
questions,andtypesofmaterialwewanttoseeinstudenthands.Teachingstudentshasevolvedinto
collaborativelearning,openendedquestions,andproblemsthatareindepthanddonothaveoneanswer.
Youarelikelynoticingadifferenceinthehomeworkthatcomeshomeortheclassworktheycomehomewith.
Weencourageyoutojointhemissiontoworkontheseconcepts.Usingreallifeapplicationisthebestwayfor
achildtoconnecttolearning.Hereareafewhomeideasfrom

Exploremathineverydaylifecountingoutforkstosetthetable,pouringfromagallonofmilk,telling
thetimewhenhisfavoriteTVprogrambegins.Whenkidsrealizethatmathisallaroundthem,they
begintorelaxandseeitsmeaningintheirlives.
Modelanalyticalandmathematicalthinking.Includeyourchildrenwhenfollowingarecipe,orwhen
buildingintheworkshop.Beaproblemsolver,posequestions,andfindsolutions.Talkabout
likenessesanddifferences,andexplainyourreasoning.
Encourageyourchildtoexplainhisthinkingprocesssoyoucanunderstandhisreasoning.
Whendriving,talkabouthownumbershelpusdeterminehowfastwedrive,thedistancetraveled,the
mileagethecargetspergallonofgas,andhowlongitwilltaketogethome.
Exposeyourchildtomoneyinherearlyschoolyears.Havehercollectcoinsinapiggybankandcount
themoutregularly.Ifshereceivesanallowance,haveherkeeptrackoftheamountorstartabank
account.
Haveyourchilduseananalogandadigitalwatchtolearnbothmethodsoftellingtime.
RaceforEducation:
TodayyoushouldfindtheRaceforEdkickoffpacketinyourEagleFolder.We
encourageyoutohelpyourstudentthinkofasmanysupportersaspossibletosendalettertothisyear.We
haveprizesforstudentsthatseemedexcitedaboutthismorningasamotivationforourbiggestfundraiserof
theyear!Thanksinadvanceforalltheworkthatyouputintothiseffort.Itreallyisworththetime!
HEROES:
Nextweekwewillbekickingoffaneightweekwellnesschallengeforstudentsandstaff!Wealso
encouragefamiliestojoininonthefun!EachweekintheThursdayfolder,studentswillreceiveahalfsheetof
paperwiththechallengefortheweek(MondaySunday).Thepaperhasticketsforthestudentandparentto
fillouteachtimetheycompletethechallenge.Ticketsshouldbecutoutandreturnedtoschoolandwillbe
collectedbygradelevel.Thegradelevelwiththemostattheendofthemonthwillearnanextrarecess!The
firstchallengeis20minutesofphysicalactivity.Forevery20minutes,studentsandstaffexercisetheycanput
inaticket!Researchshowsthatjust20minutesofexerciseimprovesyourhealth,strengthandmood!
