Diet Edu Fiber

The fiber restricted diet, also known as a low-residue diet, aims to prevent gastrointestinal distress by restricting fiber intake. Who needs this?


Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) pain, diarrhea
o Ulcerative colitis
o Crohns disease

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)


o Chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, constipation or diarrhea

Patients recovering from surgery on the GI tract

Types of Fiber
2 Types of Fiber:
Soluble fiber = absorbs water, bulks the stool
o Oatmeal, nuts, beans, apples

Insoluble fiber = does not absorb water


o Whole wheat, brown rice, seeds and skins of fruit and vegetables
