Purpose of Diet	
 Previously called a low-residue diet
 Prevent gastrointestinal (GI) distress

Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Constipation
 Restricts fiber (roughage)
 Consists of easily digested foods to allow the gut to
rest and heal
Who needs this?	
 Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)  pain, diarrhea
o Ulcerative colitis
o Crohns disease
 Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
o Chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, constipation or diarrhea
 Patients recovering from surgery on the GI tract
Types of Fiber	
 2 Types of Fiber:
 Soluble fiber = absorbs water, bulks the stool
o Oatmeal, nuts, beans, apples
 Insoluble fiber = does not absorb water
o Whole wheat, brown rice, seeds and skins of fruit and vegetables
Why would ber
restriction help?	
 Decrease the volume and bulk of the stool
 Slower movement of foods through the intestines
 May also decrease diarrhea, abdominal pain, and
gas and bloating
What to Eat	
 Tender meats
 Breads with < 2 g fiber per serving
 Well cooked vegetables without seeds
o Already broken down
 Canned and soft fruits
What to Avoid	
 Fresh/raw fruits and vegetables
o Except bananas
 Whole grains
 Seeds and whole nuts
 Tough meats
Also Best to Avoid	
Acidic foods
Spicy foods
Fried foods
Greasy foods
Lactose
Sugar
Caffeine
