APN aggregate maximum bit rate
The purpose of the APN aggregate maximum bit rate information element is to indicate
the initial subscribed APN-AMBR when the UE establishes a PDN connection or to indicate the
new APN-AMBR if it is changed by the network.
The APN aggregate maximum bit rate information element is coded as shown in
figure 9.9.4.2.1 and table 9.9.4.2.1.
The APN aggregate maximum bit rate is a type 4 information element with a minimum
length of 4 octets and a maximum length of 8 octets. Octets 5-8 are optional. If octet 5 is
included, then octet 6 shall also be included, and octets 7-8 may be included. If octet 7 is
included, then octet 8 shall also be included. The length of the APN-AMBR IE can be either 4
octets, 6 octets or 8 octets.

Remarks:AMBR rate can be easily found over the S1AP_INITIAL_CONTEXT_SETUP_REQ message from S1
trace, example as below:- However, when performing Drive Test or troubleshooting on site, it will be
deficult to understand the AMBR rate from Genex Probe Attach Message, thus understanding the theory
above are needed.

About AMBR - Sim

Example 1:-
Octet 3/4:Dec (254) = Bin (1111 1110)
UL/DL = 8640kbps
Thus, from AMBR obtained through Attach
Message, user maximumn allowable
Octet 5:Dec (158) = Bin (1001 1110)
DL = 16Mbps + (158-74) * 1Mbps
= 16Mbps + 84Mbps
= 100Mbps
throughput is 100Mbps for Downlink; while
50Mbps for Uplink.
Octet 6:Dec (108) = Bin (0110 1100)
UL = 16Mbps + (108-74) * 1Mbps
= 16Mbps + 34Mbps
= 50Mbps

Example 2:-
Octet 3/4:Dec (254) = Bin (1111 1110)
Thus, from AMBR obtained through Attach
UL/DL = 8640kbps
Message, user maximumn allowable
Octet 5/6:-
throughput is 256 Mbps for Downlink; while
Dec (250) = Bin (1111 1010)
8.64Mbps for Uplink.
DL = 128Mbps + (250-186) * 2Mbps
= 128Mbps + 64 * 2Mbps
= 256Mbps
