A Chinamans
Chance:
Reflections on the
American Dream
Sacrifices
I think of the sacrifices made by
my own parents. I appreciate the
hardship of the long road traveled
by my father one of whose first
jobs in America was painting the
yellow line down a South Dakota
interstate- And by my Mother
whose first job here was filing pay
stubs for a New York restaurant.
From such beginnings, they were
able to build a comfortable life
and provide me with a breadth of
resources- through arts, travel,
and an Ivy League education. It
was an unspoken obligation for
them to do so,
Leaving everything behind
I was able to connect with that
paragraph because I am a First
Generation Immigrant, and my
mom had to give up a lot to get my
sisters and I to the U.S. she gave
up a great career in Finances, and
her home to come here an work
taking care of elderly people, and
to live in an Apartment, but she
was willing to sacrifice it all just
so my sisters and I lived in a
better place with endless
possibilities to have a better future
then in our homeland.
The American
Dream
To me, the dream is not just about
buying a bigger house than the one I
grew up in or having shinier stuff
now than I had as a kid. It also
represents a sense of opportunity
that binds generations together in
commitment, so that the young
inherit not only property but also
perseverance, not only money but
also a mission to make good on the
strivings of their parents and
grandparents
I see just as clearly as anyone else
the crack in the idealist vision of
fulfillment for all. But because my
parents came here with virtually
nothing, because they did build
something, I see the enormous
potential inherent in the ideal
Roll model
Ever since we arrived in the U.S.
my mom has always had 2-3 jobs
so we can have somewhere to live
and food on the table, she has
been a roll model and taught us to
work hard for the things we want
to achieve in life, pushed my
sisters and I to do better and
achieve greater things then she
has by coming to this country.
And after being in this country
she has accomplished so much for
coming here with nothing. She
teaches us that the American
Dream is out there we just need to
want it Bad enough and push
thru all of the struggles that we
face such as discrimination,
racism to achieve what we want.
