The documentary film "Gutom" showed the lives of impoverished families in the Philippines struggling with hunger and poverty. It profiled Roland Barron, a father of 7 who makes 150-200 pesos a day selling recycled sprayers, and Antonio Sabillo, a father of 13 who carries heavy loads in Divisoria. Watching the film made the author realize how difficult life is for those experiencing hunger every day, feeling grateful for never lacking food but also wanting to help address the problem.

REFLECTION PAPER ON GUTOM

Submitted by: Camille V. Ramirez(C-Pha8)

The documentary film that our group watched was entitled Gutom by iWitness. The
documentary film was basically all about the hunger and poverty situation that our country
experiences then up to now. It showed the life of Mr. Roland Barron, a father of 7 children who
lives in Malabon. He makes a living by selling recycled sprays for fifteen pesos each. His
average income is about 150-200 pesos whenever he sells sprayers. Another life shown in the
documentary film was that of Antonio Sabillo, a father of 13 children who lives near Divisoria
and makes a living by carrying heavy loads of goods delivered in Divisoria. Mr Antonio once
said in the film that he actually thought of doing bad things in order for him to get through
hunger, but he was also thinking about his kids. What would be of him if he gets into jail? These
were just some of the lives shown in the film. After watching this film, I really felt sad for the
current situations that are happening in our society today. Ive always heard about poverty and
hunger but never really imagined that it would be this hard for those experiencing it. I in my
lifetime never had a day without food. Seeing this film made me think about others, who are very
unfortunate. It made me grateful for what I have. But I dont want to simply stop there; I want to
be part of the solution to this problem. As a student, probably what I can do is to join feeding
programs to be able to reach those who need this the most. I can also help in donating food for
the less fortunate. I can give in my own ways whenever I see people in the street that are hungry,
that is why I always carry biscuits with me wherever I go. This is to give food to them instead of
giving money.
