TOOL-BOX TALK
WORKING ON LIVE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
Thorough planning and extreme caution must be taken when men have to work on Live
Electrical Equipment. Before any work on live equipment starts, there must be a
thorough knowledge of the work involved, personal protective equipment must be
available, and all necessary work permits must be obtained. Ensure the Lock-Out / HoldTag system is implemented. Double check to make sure the equipment is isolated and
de-energized.
When more than one crew needs to work on the same equipment at the same
time, then each crew shall install individual Locks while isolating the equipment.
Employees must never work on live equipment alone. In addition to the man doing the
job, there must be another electrician, or a foreman, or supervisor in attendance while
this work is being carried out, and he must know where to isolate the equipment.
Before starting a job, the exact voltages should be known. This is important as it
determines the type of personal protection required for the work. If there is any doubt
about voltages, a check must be made before the work is started.
Work platforms and equipment used near energized equipment shall be properly
grounded.
Upon completion of work on de-energized equipment, the crew leader should make sure
that all his crew are clear of the equipment and then only he should close his permit and
remove his Lock.
Warning Signs, Guards or Barriers must be placed next to energized lines or equipment,
if they are near the working area, to warn the concerned workmen.
Always obey warning signs.
If in any doubt, ask the supervisor or responsible person.
NEVER TAKE CHANCES.
