FACTS ABOUT GUATEMALA ITSELF.

Basic Facts:
Capital: Guatemala City
Official Language: Spanish
Type of Money: Quetzals

Government and Leader:


The Guatemalans have a similar government as us.
In the Executive Branch, there is the President and

the Council of Ministers.


In the Legislative Branch, there is congress(158
members).
In the Judicial Branch, there is the Constitutional
Court and the Supreme Court of Justice.
Their president, as of now, is Otto Perez Molina.

December 21- a town fair takes place in

Chichicastenango with traditional dances and music


December 24- Christmas Eve
December 25- Christmas Day
December 31- New Years Eve

Attractions/ Reasons to Visit:


Escuintla- area with cattle ranching, sugar cane

farms, cottonseed farms, and a small oil refinery

Flores- a city built on an island in Lake Petn Itza;

covered in narrow cobblestone streets and colorful


buildings

Flag and Representation:


The crossed rifles represents the willingness to

defend itself by war, while the olive branches


represents the preferred peace. The sky blue stripes
represents its location between the Pacific and
Atlantic Oceans, and the white stripe represents the
purity of the countrys values and peace.

National Flower and National Tree:


National Flower: la monja blanca- the white nun
Grows in the humid forests of Verapaz,

in the Sierra de las Minas,


and on the forest slopes of some volcanoes.

The Ceiba was sacred to the Maya.

Art Work:
Pedro Rafael Gonzalez Chavajay is a famous artist

known in Guatemala. His work includes Cutzan


River and Rites: Men of Corn.

Famous People:
Carlos Ruiz- El Pescadito, the Little Fish,

he is known this because he can wiggle


through the opposite side.

Alex Castillo- famous actor who has been in

shows like 24 and The Unit.

Animals from Guatemala:


Howler Monkey
Jaguar
Puma
Mountain Lion
Bairds Tapir
Muscovy Duck
Resplendent Quetzal(sacred bird)
Sea Turtles

Significant Products/ Exports:


They export bananas, coffee, vegetables, and even

crude oil.

Typical Food Dish: Arroz Guatemalteco


Ingredients:
2 cups long grain rice
2 tablespoons oil
1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, celery, sweet red peppers, green peas) finely

chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
4 cups chicken stock

Procedure:
Heat the oil in a heavy saucepan and add rice.
Saut lightly until the rice has absorbed the oil, being careful to not let it change

color.
Add the mixed vegetables, salt, pepper, and chicken stock.
Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat to low.
Cool for about 20 minutes until rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.

History:
The Maya were brilliant when it came to art and science.

They made pottery, sculptures, carvings, weavings, and


paintings. They even made a writing system.
The Maya were also farmers. They used irrigation and
fertilizers to grow enough crops for feeding their people.
When it came to science, they were geniuses at time, math,
and astronomy. They made a calendar based on the solar
cycle.
After a while, the Maya abandoned their great cities and
soon the jungle covered their marvelous pyramids and
monuments.
