CE302-STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS-II
ASSIGNMENT-II
a) Indeterminate Trusses
1. Find the forces in the members of the following truss. AE/L is the same for all members.
Take BD and AE as redundants.
10 kN
D
4m
10 kN
E
4m
4m
2. Three bars of linearly elastic material are connected at A,B,C and D by pins as shown in the
figure. Determine the force in the member AB caused by the applied load. The values of L/A for
AD is 7/15, for AC 7/20 and for AB 1. Treat AB as redundant. B,C and D are hinges.
70 kN
3.6 m
B
C
2.7 m
D
2.1 m
3. Using the truss in question 1, find the forces in members due to forcing of member BC which is
short in length by 1mm.
b) Three Hinged Arches
1. Analyze a three hinged arch subjected to two concentrated load 10 kN and 20 kN at 10 and 20 m
from left support. The arch span is 30 m and the supports are at the same level. The central rise
of the arch is 5 m. Profile is parabolic. Find the bending moments under the load.
2. Analyze the above arch if the load is 4 kN/m udl. spread over the central half of the span.
3. A three hinged segmental arch is of radius R. If the included angle at the centre in the arch is
(not equal to 1800) , find the horizontal thrust if it is subjected to a udl w.
c) Two Hinged Arches
1. A two hinged semi circular arch is subjected to a vertical load W at the quarter point. Find
the support reactions. Also find the maximum + ve and ve moments occurring in the arch.
Draw the BMD.
2. Do the above problem when the arch is subjected to a udl for the left half span of the arch.
3. A two hinged parabolic arch of span 30 m and central rise 4m is subjected to three
concentrated loads 10 kN,30 kN and 20 kN at three equi-distant points on the arch. If the
variation of MI is considered secant, Find the support reactions.
