Red Badge of Courage Essay
Many things can be applied from different parts of life to another. In this case, the
hardships of the civil war can be applied to any war in general. It can also be applied to life as a
whole and all the struggles what we seem to go through. Henry Fleming goes to war expecting it
to be something that it wasnt. He had intentions of becoming a glorious war hero; however
things did not go as planned. He soon learned the harsh realities and what it would take to
survive this conflict
The struggles and concepts in this book can be applied to all wars. The types of things
soldiers experience is almost universal. From modern wars to biblical times, soldiers have been
worried about running from battle, fighting and dying. Henry, like many other soldiers, felt
trapped. But he instantly saw that it would be impossible for him to escape from the regiment. It
inclosed him. And there were iron laws of tradition and law on four sides. He was in a moving
box(3.15). Soldiers never personally are at fault for the war, yet they are the ones who pay. The
country counts on them and they count on each other. This concept can be applied to all wars in
general. No matter what the cause of the war, or the time of the war.
The Red Badge of Courage can also relate to many life situations in general. Things such
as growing up, becoming a man, and facing your fear are all covered in this novel. Life is a battle

and we are all soldiers. We are all comrades and in it together. There was a consciousness
always of the presence of his comrades about him. He felt the subtle battle brotherhood more
potent even than the cause for which they were fighting. It was a mysterious fraternity born of
the smoke and danger of death (5.12). Life is difficult and it is much harder to go through by
yourself. With the help of comrades, it is significantly less difficult to survive the battle.
Many things can be learned from this book. First of these things is becoming a man and
facing fears. Henry started out as a coward, he ran from battle. But at the end Henry discovered
his inner warrior. This can be applied universally. He suddenly lost concern for himself, and
forgot to look at a menacing fate. He became not a man but a member. He felt that something of
which he was a part--a regiment, an army, a cause, or a country--was in crisis. He was welded
into a common personality which was dominated by a single desire. For some moments he could
not flee no more than a little finger can commit a revolution from a hand (5.13). Transformation
and adaptation is required upon facing adversity. This quote gives an example of the
transformation of Henry.
Overall, The book; The Red Badge of Courage can be applied to many different
situations. Whether it is another war, or life in general many lessons can be learned from this
novel. I felt that I have learned things from this book.
