My question that I am inquiring is why cheerleading is a sport?

What I also question is

why does society frown upon cheerleaders? My last and final question is why society frowns
upon male cheerleaders? They matter because I want to break the stereotype that society has on
cheerleading. People think that is just a girls activity and that it is girls just dancing around half
naked. Cheerleading isnt that, it is so much more than that. In some peoples eyes cheerleading
is a popularity contest between other girls. Cheerleading teaches leadership and confidence to
young girls who are active in cheerleading.
I will use Cheerleader! Cheerleader! : an American icon, which the description talks
about how if they are entertainers, sex object, or athletes and how cheerleading affects our beliefs
and national identities. I can elaborate on how feminism plays a part in this because cheerleading
is frowned upon, but volleyball they wear the same thing but society finds it acceptable.
Another source I will be using is Go! Fight! Win! : Cheerleading in American culture
which goes in depth with how cheerleading is a sport. It also talks about how it is a symbol for
leadership but also the negative outlook on how it is only popular people and attractiveness.
My third source is In the game: gay athlete and the cult of masculinity which provides
stories of athletes struggling with being gay while participating in a sport, cheerleading is in one
of the chapters. With this it can take on a psychological approach with how these boys are
athletes, just because they are gay doesnt make them any less of an athlete.
Other resources I will use is finding article that are peer reviewed proving that
cheerleading is a sport and what makes it a sport. I will also look up information on how culture
has defined cheerleading and how maybe feminism can be connected to this sport.
