Newtons Laws of Motion Project
Sir Isaac Newton lived during the 1600s. Like all scientists, he made observations about the world around him. Some of his observations were about motion. His observations have been supported by more data over time; and we now call these Newtons Laws of Motion. His laws of motion explain rest, constant motion, accelerated motion, and describe how balanced and unbalanced forces act to cause these states of motion.
Review the three laws of motion:
1. Newton's first law of motion says that an object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object will not change its motion unless a force acts on it. An object that is not moving remains at rest until something pushes or pulls it. An object that is moving remains moving until something pushes or pulls it. All objects resist having their motion changed. This tendency to resist a change in motion is called inertia. The more mass an object has, the greater its inertia. 2. The second law of motion states that the force of an object is equal to its mass times its acceleration. A change in motion occurs only if a net force is exerted on an object. A net force changes the velocity of the object, and causes it to accelerate. If an object is acted upon by a net force, the change in velocity will be in the direction of the net force. The acceleration of an object depends on its mass. The more mass an object has or the more inertia it has, the harder it is to accelerate. More mass means less acceleration if the force acting on the objects is the same. 3. Newton's third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. When one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts an equal force in the opposite direction on the first object. The force exerted by the first object is the action force. The force exerted by the second object is the reaction force.
Option 1: Write a song explaining who Sir Isaac Newton is and Newtons 3 laws of motion. As a group, select a song to use and replace the lyrics with your own original lyrics. Students should have the instrumental version of the song ready each day to practice and also on the day of presentation. The song should explain who and what Sir Isaac did to make him famous, as well as explaining each law of motion in detail. You must give your song a creative title. MUST TURN IN TYPED LYRICS (WITH NAME OF SONG & MUSIC BEING USED) ON THE DAY OF DUE DATE. MUST PRESENT THE SONG TO THE CLASS ON DUE DATE: February 20, 2015 ! Option 2: Illustrate an example of each of the three laws of motion. Use one poster board or large piece of paper 3 illustrations on one board or one large sheet of paper. You may draw or use images from magazines or the Internet. Include an explanation of how the illustration demonstrates or describes the law of motion. Put the explanation next to the illustration. Do not use a separate sheet of paper for the explanation. Make sure your illustrations are colorful and neat. Option 3: You are a childrens author who is writing a story about Sir Isaac Newton and his 3 Laws of Motion. Your job will be to explain who Sir Isaac was and Newtons 3 Laws of motion. Remember this is a childrens book, so the book should be easy to understand and include illustrations on each page. The book should include a title and author page. The book should have at least 8-10 pages. Choose this project if you enjoy creative writing.
Option 4: Create a Project: If you would prefer to develop your own project based on these standards write a proposal and submit it to the instructor for approval. Your project must explain who Sir Isaac Newton is and the three Laws of Motion. Date Assigned: Tuesday, February 10, 2015 Due Date: Friday, February 20, 2015 (AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS OR IT WILL BE COUNTED AS LATE AND EARN A ZERO!). Note: You may turn your project in BEFORE THE DUE DATE. If you choose Option 1 and are not present to perform, you (not the group) will earn the zero, and the group will perform without you!!!
