1. Characterize Alfred at the beginning of the story. What adjectives could you
use to describe the sort of person is he? Who does he seem to care about?
Where do you think he is going with his life?

2. Characterize Alfreds mother. What adjectives could you use to describe the
sort of person she is? What does the way she handles the situation demonstrate
about her character?

3. How does Alfred change in the story? What does he realize about his mother
at the end of the story that he did not realize at the beginning?

4. On the back of this sheet and with a partner write a script or dialogue of a
conversation that might occur between Alfred and his mother on the morning
after the incident at the drug store. Consider how Alfred might be different now
then he was the night before. Use this format:
