PREPARATION
Name: Dara Belohlavek
Course: Mathematics
Topic (Unit): Statistics/Data Analysis Lesson: 3rd grade
Big Idea Expression: Bar graphs can be used to represent gathered information
Standards:
2.6.3.A: Gather data from surveys and observations within the classroom or homes.
2.6.3.B: Organize and display data using pictures, tallies, charts, bar graphs and
pictographs.
Objectives:
Given a prompt, the children will create and survey their peers with a question in order
to gather information for a graph.
Given a blank graph, the children will correctly label and input previously collected
information into a bar graph.
Essential Questions:
How can you use bar graphs outside of math class? Where else might they be useful?
What other things could you survey?
Materials/Resources:
Blank graph worksheet
Chalkboard
Computer
Vocabulary:
Graph: a diagram used to visually describe information
Plot: to mark on a chart or graph
X-Axis: the horizontal (left to right) line of the graph
Y-Axis: the vertical (up and down) line of the graph
Label: to name something or put in a group or category
UDL Considerations:
Level 1: Students should repeat parts of graph or point to label parts of graph in order to
demonstrate understanding.
Level 3: Students should verbally explain how to make a bar graph alongside a partner.
Level 5: Students should verbally explain the purpose and process of making bar charts
alongside a partner.
PRESENTATION
Introduction: To peek their interest in bar graphs, I will have a powerpoint of various funny bar
graphs for them to get them to laugh a little bit.

EVALUATION
Student Closure: Pair/Share: the teacher will ask the students to pair up with the person next to
them and share how to correctly make a bar graph.
Assessment: The students will complete the worksheet with their personal survey/bar graph
and hand in to the teacher. Teacher will assess knowledge through worksheets, participation,
and observation during individual/group work.
Homework: Take a survey of people or friends at home and make a bar graph
