California English Language Development Test (CELDT)

CELDT helps schools identify and place students in order to teach and guide them properly. The purpose
of this test is to monitor student progress in learning English.
Im not that much familiar with this test as administrator just as a parent. My daughter takes this test
every year. I think shell be taking the exam until she becomes fully proficient in English. There are 5
levels of proficiency students can achieve:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Beginning(simple phrases)
Early Intermediate(simple tasks)
Intermediate (short stories)
Early Advanced(close to native)
Advanced (like native)

My daughter is somewhere between Early advanced and advanced. I can track her progress through
CELDT scores. I can also know strong side and needs to improve side of my child. With
cooperation of her English teacher we can help improve her reading, writing, speaking or listening
skills.
After watching youtube channel you provided about EL students, I understand that they may know
math or science very well, teachers acknowledge when they express what they know in English.
