HANNAN
HAPPENINGS
Whats New in Room 46?
Dear Parents,
Its hard to believe November is
here already. Im so very proud of
the progress your children are
making. I look forward to seeing
you at conferences and discussing
their growth.
I wish you and your family a
wonderful Thanksgiving.
Im very thankful to have such a
cooperative and supportive group
of parents
LANGUAGE ARTS
!emember the best thing you can
have your child do is !"#D, !"#D,
!"#D. !eading aloud to them is
also important. I sure hope you are
noticing an increased interest in
reading with your child.
$e sure to see that your child is
filling out his or her reading log
properly and sign all logs every
Thursday night.
    I re%uire them to make a daily
entry about their independent
reading. I will be grading the
independent reading responses at
the end of the marking period.
&our children love the wonderful
literature we are reading in both
shared and guided reading.
The skills we will be working on
this month are se%uence of events,
main idea and supporting details,
inference, drawing conclusions,
analy'ing and evaluating te(t and
forming opinions.
)rammar skills include present,
past and future tenses, the use of
commas, and abstract nouns.
Their writing is growing daily. Im
very pleased with what I see and I
look forward to sharing some of
their pieces at conference. *e
have been working on narrative
writing and we will be wrapping
that genre up at the end of this
month. They have learned how to
bring their characters to life
through description, dialogue,
actions and reactions of others. I
will now focus on writing a setting
which +paints the picture, for the
reader. *e also are working on the
importance of revising and editing
our writing.
Their cursive writing is looking
great. They will be displaying their
talents for you to see when you
visit at conference. They will be
writing a turkey poem in cursive
MATH
*e have started unit - .ath
Investigations. This unit focuses on
/ mathematical emphases. The
first involves the base 01 number
system. They will read, write and
se%uence numbers to 0,111 and
use place value to determine the
si'e of any number to 0,111.
The second concept is to be able to
construct 0,111 from groups of
011. #lso they will use the value of
each place to make 2 and - digit
numbers close to a 011.
The third emphasis is on
computation and fluency. They will
be adding and subtracting - digit
numbers solving problems with -
digit numbers by breaking them
apart and recombining them.
The fourth emphasis is on
understanding different types of
subtraction problems. They will
solve problems that involve finding
a missing part, solve problems that
involve comparison and visuali'ing
and representing the actual
comparison problem.
Please be aware that I will be
introducing multiplication in
December. Please practice addition
and subtraction facts. 3everal
children have yet to master those.
I will be testing fact fluency in both
areas prior to the close of the
marking period for a report card
grade.

SCIENCE
*e will be starting a unit on Plants.
#sk them each evening to talk
about what they have learned in
class.
This unit will last appro(imately 4
weeks. The children will e(perience
the complete life cycle of a plant in
a very short time and learn that
the cycle includes germination,
growth, development of speciali'ed
parts, and even dying of some
plants with the promise of new life
in the seed.
*e use rapid growing seeds called
*isconsin 5ast Plants.
#fter planting their seeds, they will
observe and record the first stages
of growth. Then they will use a
bee stick to simulate the actions of
a bee. They will gain an
understanding of pollination and its
role in fertili'ation.
*e will be learning about the steps
of the scientific method. The skills
they will gain are observation and
recording of those observations.
They will be predicting and drawing
conclusions about their
observations. They will measure
and record the growth of their
plants. They will report their
findings in their science notebooks,
orally and in some cases using
graphs.
Their science notebooks and a
plant packet will be part of their
grade as well as %ui''es and a final
assessment.
