The Last Homecoming and Trial of Rizal

Rizal learned in October 1896 that Spanish newspapers were blaming him for a revolution in the Philippines, and his diary was confiscated during a ship search but later returned. An attempt by friends to rescue Rizal using a writ of habeas corpus failed when the court in Singapore denied the request, since the ship Rizal was on was considered a foreign warship. Rizal arrived in Manila in November 1896, where Spanish authorities gathered evidence against him while he was imprisoned before his trial.
