Double bubble map






Double bubble maps are an analytical tool used to compare and contrast any two characteristics, objects, viewpoints or
theories. The bubble layout allows for greater writing space than other types of compare and contrast maps such as Venn
diagrams.

Students can work independently or in pairs. Two individual bubbles maps (left and right) are connected with central
bubbles listing ideas that are common to both categories (compare). A topic needs to be decided and then two objects or
concepts compared and contrasted. The centre bubble of each individual map is where students record each object or
concept. In the outer bubbles students record the differences of each object or concept (contrast).

Double bubble maps are a useful tool to give to students with an assignment or inquiry to help them organise thoughts and
ideas about their investigation, or to help with brainstorming viewpoints for a debate. For example, students could compare
and contrast series and parallel circuits, osmosis and diffusion, acids and bases, or mass and weight.
